Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Floor Mats for Pain Cave

Putting together pain cave in new house. Any suggestions for effective/affordable mats to put under spin bikes and elliptical trainer to protect carpeting?

Go to Lowes or Home Depot and buy a cheap rubber mat.

They often have some on a roll that you can get cut to length.

I forget where I got it, but I have one that's a perfect size, something like 4'x6' and it's made out of a dense foam/rubber that has some give, but is also grippy. Kind of like a yoga mat, but thicker and slightly softer (maybe closer to a wrestling mat). It's nice because it deforms to the shape of what you put on it, holds it in place, but is not too hard or soft. A plain rubber mat would also probably work too, but might be a bit more unwieldy (and smell like rubber for a long time).

Maybe work, might smell:

There's a carpet shop here who will sew an edge tape around a chunk of carpet for a custom size mat, maybe carpet over carpet would work.

Not sure how well it will work on carpet, but I picked up 2 packs of 24x24" foam tiles from harbor freight. I'm pretty happy with them.

i guess this is one of the benefits of riding in the garage, i just use cardboard and toss out after about 10 rides or so. less in winter.

As a caution sweat can get through tiles at the seam and damage the floor beneath.

i use the cardboard to protect the garage floor from the salt. salt is corrosive and i don';t want my garage floor spalling.

Ours was resurfaced and epoxied, I still have the mats down because we work out on there too

Has anyone tried the Amazon Basic mat? I have some of the floor tiles, but I want a mat on top of that (sweat through the seams for instance). Wondering if there is something a bit thicker that might give a little bit of rocking to help with comfort (obviously not rocker plate level).

I've been using two layers of those 18" interlocking mats that phrantic09 mentioned. The floor underneath is tile (thus the mats are overneath) so no damage to the floor.

I cut a 'V' in two (layered) of the tiles and rotated another two (layered) 45 degrees - to allow a narrower strip - one tile - but wide enough for the Kickr's legs. The two layer gives a noticeable amount of rock without any instability.
