Vintage Trek-800 Mountain Bike

Is this bike worth $100? The seller doesn't know the frame size but says he is 5'9 and fits him fine.

To me, no. But if you are in a hot market, it isn't totally out of range. I'd want to buy it for $50 to $75 if I was wanting one. Paint is not great overall. The RD appears to be a replacement to my eyes and is nothing special. What are you hoping to do with the bike? Is it a potential grocery-getter? Rails to trails bike? It is a solid frame, as most Trek's are, so it has that going for it.

$100 is a little bit of a stretch, $75 would be better. The 800 was the lowest model of traditional steel mountain bikes they made and there were many models in the 800 series. The 800 series in itself was the lowest tier of mtn bikes they sold. That said..if it's tuned up properly it'll ride fine. One Trek reference suggests it's a 1993 model, but I don't see red listed as an option in the 1993 catalog. As for the frame, to my eye it's a 22 inch frame. I have a 20 inch 970 and this frame is definitely a size up. A 22 inch frame was never intended for someone 5'9". It looks like he has the saddle way forward to reduce the reach. If you're 6 foot+ then this bike might fit you.

I'll second everything fishboat said. This is a low-end bike (note the bottom of the barrel Shimano SIS rear derailleur and the yellowing plastic spider on the crank) . This is a huge bike. I'm 5' 8" and this would be way too big for me. Trust your eyes more than anything written in the ad.

Step 1: Google MTB sizing and take some personal measurements.

Step 2: Never count on sellers to know if it fits you.

I'd like to see a short video of the "5-9" owner riding that bike.

That is a BIG bike, highly doubt it will fit you. And in the world of vintage rigid frame MTBs, the "trick" is to aim higher. A bike that may have originally sold for $950 can be found for $125. Meanwhile, a bike that originally sold for $225 might be for sale for $100. The bike that originally sold for $950 will have a much better frame and much better parts.
