paint is super thin and has some kind of touch up paint on it. doubt its a repaint. and if by some chance it is a repaint then someone spent some good money doing it because it sure isn't from a spray can. then someone would have had to go and buy all the decals and install them too. not saying i'm 100% sure it hasn't been repainted but if you saw it in person i think you would agree with me.

i'll have to look a little closer when i get a chance to get it out side. personally it really doesn't matter if its a repaint or not to me. but would like to know the size. guess that really doesn't matter either as long as i fit it i guess..lol

The numbers can be hard to see unless you have good light. They are stamped in points and are kind of shallow. Look under the chain stays, sometimes on top of the drive side stay up by the BB, once I found them on the front side of the seat stay

I have found s/n's on bottom side of chain stays, on top of chain stays, and on seat tubes.
They are pin-punched into the aluminum apparently with a center punch, as they are typically pretty sloppy...

so is it a 54cm frame. built on jan 5th 1988 and #014 built?

i'll have to ride it.. i usually prefer a smaller frame on my bikes. for some reason i'm more comfortable on the smaller ones.. i'm like 5'10 1/2" tall. 32 length jeans. i guess leg length would have a lot to do with it too,,
chain clip to change tire. now thats pretty slick...
i'll have to find a set of pedals i like and ride it some and see how i like it..

I have one cannondale R300 year made i not know but the frame is the one where the dropouts is behinds the seat stays. The frame seat tube is 58cm and top tube is 56cm. My inseam is 32" seat tube is too high for me? When i ride i feel okay even online carculator show me i need seat tube 56cm. My bike is has downtube shifters. The bike is fast i have pass carbon fiber bike and titanium bikes. I have one groupset ultegra 6500. is worth i upgrade that bike? Dropouts is 126mm but i fit 130mm wheel with 9 speeds cassette. How off from bike fit is frame 58cm vs to 56cm?

My 3.0 has had a 130 mm rear hub since the mid '90s without a problem and my older project SR will be running a 9S. These older Cannondales are very update friendly.

Here's my current ride. Went through a couple of frame exchanges (and parts like you wouldn't believe). My first Cannondale was a blue one, oval seatstays. Later on, my 2.8 frame cracked at the dropout so it was replaced with this one.
Mavic Open Pro 36H double butted DT spokes, Phil Wood hubs, Dura Ace 7 speed (freewheel), Dean titanium seatpost, Avocet 02 Air saddle w/ titanium rails, Campione del Mondo 66-42 bars on a Worthington (Tange Prestige) stem, Campy Athena pedals (black cleats please). Just replaced the tires, got me some Specialized Turbo Pro 700x23 running at 120 psi. I remember when the first Turbo S, OMG no tire treads!

My '93 R600 2.8 uses a clamp on FD. Here is how it originally looked.

I just may have purchased a braze-on FD to go with the downtube clamp because maybe it wasn't available as a clamp-on with that seat tube diameter. I just can't remember!

Not certain if your post is directed at me or not.
If it is, the Vuelta wheels I'm running I bought from Nashbar and they are the HD or Heavy Duty version with 36 spokes and sturdy rims. Currently they are on sale for $142 minus another 20% which puts them at about $115 shipped. An amazing deal because it includes the QR skewers and rim tape. The hubs are Vuelta branded as well.
I personally think they are fantastic wheels and this year I bought a second set for my '96 SR500 Cannondale. The hub bearings are silky smooth. They arrived very true and have maintained their true-ness, despite our very rough, cracked and uneven roads, and my weight (used to tip the scales at 300+ lbs., now down to 230).
Since I am a Clydesdale and my roads are so bad, I need strong wheels and I'm not concerned about the weight of the wheel. I am very pleased and you can't beat the price! The newer versions have the toned down decal graphics, which is a plus.
The drive train is microShift integrated 9 speed shifters, FD and RD, working with a SRAM 9 speed chain and cassette (11-34), and a Nashbar compact crankset (50-34). The bike as picture is at the top of a local mountain where the climb is from about 500 feet elevation to 2500 feet over a 7 mile ride. Some sections of the ride are about 15%.

50/34 crank and 11-34 cassette sounds good combination. I ride in bike trail have elevation from 700 feet to 900 feet. I use crank 53/39 and cassette 9 speeds 12-25. in flats is okay but in hills is hard to pedal my speed slow down very much in hills. i should i tried 50-34 crank and cassette 11-34? What model micro shift you have. I have seen online but never i have tried. Vuelta wheels almost i have buy last year but finally i buy used wheels fulcrum racing T. I never install that wheels but finally i deside put on my bike last week. But i do mistake i tried make one 9 speeds cassette from other casssetes i have 8 speeds 7 speeds. finallly i cracked the freehub. My fault happens that. I have other set wheels fulcrum racing 7 is was on bike used i have buy but who is has the bike i found in pawnshop. the spokes nipples is stripped i cant true the wheels much. And with the fulcrum racing 7 wheels i had 8 flats. I had go in LBS and gave me 16mm rim tape the mechanic install the tape for some miles is was okay but finally got flat. I go in other LBS just get opinion the mechanic tell me i see that too the rim tape had move. is put correct finally i got flat again. Is happens i look my other fulcrum wheels had the original rim tape is was 18mm. I buy rim strip 18mm i install my self. now i see The LBS had sale me the wrong size tape

Does the quality of the actual frame set vary from model to model? Or was it all based on the components? e.g., a R400 vs a R800...

On older Cannnondales, the frames were the same within the model line, i.e. R, ST, or T, etc., and then the components were improved. The higher the number the better the components. Thus a R400 had mid-level components compared to a R1000. However, in the early '90s also watch for the difference in let's say a R400 3.0 and the R600 2.8. The 3.0 and the 2.8 indicate the weight of the frame. Both had the cantilever stays.

I just sold a like new R300 with a triple crank for $400 and I thought that it was more than a fair price. It was a mid 90's bike and I loved the way it rode and hated to sell it. I just did not like the brifters and hated to re-work the bike to my specs. It was just too nice to mess with IMO. I also would have preferred to have a 54 or even a 52cm frame and it was a 56. It was a fine riding bike and it was not the first nice Cannondale I flipped. They have all been a little too large for me.
