There are plenty of racks which mount on seat posts/stays etc. And some are easily and quickly removed when the rider wants to.

My go to, do everything, bike is my drop bar conversion 1988 Schwinn Cimarron LE.

Bought years ago at a garage sale for $15, in miserable condition. Found a nice 1990 donor bike and did a full transplant. Converted to drops as I prefer more hand position choices.

I've had a myriad of racks on this bike. Any of the various rigid frame MTBs can make a fine choice.

I have used a MTB for many years. First was my old one, then I found a frame in the dumpster at work. I rebuilt that as a single speed (not fixed) and now it is my go to bike almost all the time. I never painted it so it is a great bike for riding in NYC s it looks like a piece of crap so I do not have to worry much about theft, although I do lock it. The MTB works good for me as I enter my facility through the eastern border of a 50,000 acre property and there are no paved roads in that area for about a mile and a half.

I have a handful of bikes to choose from. I typically ride my commuter but randomly take something else as the mood dictates. The mountain bike is the slowest, road bike the fastest. But for me, it's not the time, it's the ride. So my suggestion is simply to ride whatever makes you happy...

The best thing about a 5 mile commute is making it longer.
