My only piece of kit that won't fit into a jersey pocket is a thermal jacket with fleece lining. When I take that off, I roll it up from the collar down, then tie the arms around my waist. Rolling it up is important, so the bottom of the jacket doesn't get caught in the back wheel.

Thanks Terry, you just cost me some bucks, but received 20% off pre-black Friday price. So thanks even more.

Handle bar bags are available in different sizes. I have a small one which will carry a vest and leg warmers if needed.

I was riding alongside a friend who had her jacket tied around her waist. It got sucked into the rear wheel and locked it up. She skidded to a stop without crashing. A guy I know was mountain biking and had his sweatshirt tied on the bars. It got into the front wheel and he went over the bars at speed and got hurt pretty bad.

Tying clothing to the bike is a bad idea.

The under seat bags hold more than I thought. I need to find a light shell that will compress enough. If I need more I will find a handlebar bag.
I have a Rockbros bag on top of my too tube for my phone and keys. Is this a good brand? I bought it a couple of years ago without knowing anything.

I try to do the best I can picking the layers etc. for day's conditions. Most of my rides start with a ~4-mile descent. So, in cooler weather I often start with a very lightweight wind jacket. Once I'm down the descent and warmed up, it easily fits in a jersey pocket. I have a Castelli Ros vest that has been a wonderful piece of kit. Wind blocking up front, very breathable in the back. Packs up small enough I can fit it in a jersey pocket if needed. Rarely I'll make use of arm warmers. That's only if I know it's going to warm up a lot. Else, I'll wear a long sleeve jersey.

The jersey pockets can get pretty full if I have the wind jacket, vest, arm warmers, ride wallet and a few gels in them. But it's sort of amazing how much crap you can stuff in them and you don't even notice it while riding. At some point in the winter, I'll mount a frame bag so, I can deal with more layers. Always a hassle to dress right in the cold temps.

I guess I'm a bit of a wimp. If the bulk of my ride is below 60 F, I'm wearing tights, long sleeve jersey, vest and likely full gloves. Below 50 F, it's double layer of tights, wool base layers and soft shell jacket, skull cap, and thick gloves. Oh, and winter riding boots. But heck, it can be in the 40's and I see guys wearing bib shorts, and short sleeve jerseys. I'd be freezing dressed like that. I may not be laying down pro wattage, but I'm not cruising either.

In Italy we saw a few nuns with those lace on spoke guards to protect them from such a thing. Good habit to practice. See what I did there?

tying it to the rear rack is riskier, closer to the wheel. I prefaced my tying post with you can’t get it into the wheel and posted an example of it done wrong. You’re right about the risk, I’ve crashed from it

I have a huge seat bag because I also find it necessary to start overdressed and then strip layers. I also have a couple stretch-straps (bungees or used inner tubes) around the bag so I can secure other layers there if it is full. The key word is "secure"---as others have noted, you don't want to lose something while riding, particularly if it is likely ten end up ending your ride as it falls.

I was riding with a fanny pack and not sure why but it came on buckled and I caught it as it was coming off and one side of the buckle went right into the front spokes and sucked the fanny pack into the wheel where it jammed between the fork and flipped me instantly on my head. cracked my helmet and was lucky I did not get a neck injury or head injury (my wife would argue about the head injury).

I take my pup for a 2 mile walk on cold mornings to warm up so I do not overdress and have to bring along an unnecessary piece of clothing.
I can also ride guilt-free when I do not have to face sad brown eyes from a Terrier.

Note the large center rear pocket. Yesterday I actually stopped to remove my base layer, and then stuffed it into that large pocket.

when I was fit and lean still had to wear XXL bike jerseys

many if not most are significantly undersized (compared to US sizes)

I have two of their Core short sleeve jerseys. The pockets are designed nice and deep, but not too deep. When I tour, I can easily fit my Sony camera, phone, hanky, something like a Cliff Bar and off-bike glasses in the pockets with no sagging. IIRC, I paid only $50 for one and $55 for the other a year or two later.

Yup, Rapha knows how to do pockets. And it sounds like you shop in their sale section, too. Got my second Brevet LS jersey about a year ago for $84 -- which is cheaper than plenty of humdrum jerseys.

Several companies also make water bottle storage containers which will hold compressed items. I have a light weight rain jacket in mine.
