Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

All you need to buy is the rear 6870 derailleur, 6800 chain and make sure you're wheels are compatible.

$250 for the rd. $50 for the chain. minus the cost of you reselling your 6770 rd. Might only cost you ~$200 to upgrade.

i highly doubt 105 will be available in di2.

11? wow. Shimano desperate to get the money of the R&D back quick eh?

Thinner chain + thinner cassettes = Now you have to change them both more often great

I bet you'll get your 11-speed 105 in due time.. next revision perhaps? 105 DI2 though? I doubt you'll see that for a while.

105 11 spd should be out late summer. I like the 105 group. Durable, reliable, reasonable and there really is not anything the higher end groups have that will enhance performance for those not racing.

I'm seeing the (11sp) Ultegra 6800 chains for ~$30 with discount code applied from the popular UK sites. That's less than I just paid to source a 5700 chain locally here in The States.

I have heard from more than one LBS owner 105 will go electronic just not sure when. I really doubt 105 will go 11 speed right away, they just released 6800 and need to reap the sales of that for awhile first. I would think the 10 speed electric would continue through 105 and then 11 speed. I could be wrong

10 speed electronic? Every indication is that it is no more. I really can't see them making a 10 speed Di2 groupset again.

As above I did wonder if they might keep 5800 10 speed for now. If they go 11 they run the risk of creating product lines that aren't clearly delineated enough - 6800 is so cheap right now that there would be little reason to get 105.

I think it will be 10 spd. Still a market for it with all the 10spd wheels out there.

Where? I'm seeing $750-800 as the lowest prices(unless you are using a coupon code/sale price).

IMO they either leave 5700 10sp on the market for another year or two or go 11sp with 5800. Anything else flies in the face of the Shimano trickle-down approach. 5700 and 6700 are indistinguishable in terms of feel and shift quality.

6800 is only cheaper in the US if you import it from Europe and forgo the Shimano warranty. I see no reason to believe 5800 will be any more expensive than 5700 (which is currently about $200-250 cheaper than Ultegra.) Most people get their groups by purchasing a complete bike and manufacturers will probably continue to charge a big premium for an Ultegra vs. 105 equipped bike even after 105 goes 11sp.

I think they'll continue to push everything towards 11sped. Bike manufactures are trying to sell new gear.

For Wheels...
Since everyone is going 11 speed, (campy / shimano / sram) there's no point in making 10spd only wheels. Just make all new hubs 11 speed and throw on spacer for people still on 10 spd.

From a competitive standpoint...
Shimano is also trying to compete against SRAM / Campy. By going 11 speed, it'll provide another selling point vs SRAMs rival / apex groups. Campagnolo is bring 11 speed down to their more entry level groupos. For your average consumer buying a new bike... if they see a bike with 11 speed vs 10 speed (for the same price).... they'll probably see 11 speed as a reason to buy one bike vs the other.

Why? It's almost an inevitability. FFS, Tiagra is ten-speed now. It's not like 105 stuck with eight-speed. Or nine-speed.

I have not heard rumors of 11 speed but I have about 105 Di2 and seriously rumors usually get started by some form of truth. I heard way back in October the first time about Di2 105 so we shall see. Ultegra went electronic before 11 speed so why would 105 be any different. 10 speed is not going away any time soon and this would in theory bring electric shifting down in price to a new market maybe not a big one but never the less its just a matter of rebadging it and marketing.

Yes it's probably inevitable, but I don't see them releasing di2 for 5800, maybe for the next 5900.

but then again, I can see them doing di2 if they keep 5800 as 10spd.

Whatever doesn't matter anyways. The OP asked for 11spd upgrade, it costs almost nothing to upgrade to 11spd from 6770. I don't know how much less a 105 kit would be.

yes, but Campy's Athena EPS is supposed to be a direct competitor to Ultegra in the marketplace.

Too many groups in shimano and campagnolo line ups, the difference is that I doubt campagnolo will get rid off mechanic groups, in the other hand knowing japanese they will cut ties with mechanic groups really quick leaving them only with the 2 super low POS group tear like tiagra in the mechanic groups race.

Bump, looks like we get 5800 for the 2015 model year. Now the real question, what about a di2 version of 105?
