Fuji purchase help

I’m looking for an inexpensive steel road bike to buy so I can have a project bike to rebuild/update. A seller on c/l nearby has a Fuji Cromoly Compo with bar end shifters listed that seems like a good deal. I’ve searched for info about Fuji Cromoly Compo but don’t find much that helps me. I’d certainly appreciate any info or opinions about this Fuji bike that anyone can offer. I’ve never ridden a drop bar bike in my life, but I have almost 4000 miles on my hybrid since I got it new in 12/2017, itching to try a drop bar. Thanks for any info!

If this; https://houston.craigslist.org/bik/d...021311216.html is the bike, the paint is a bit rough, but I would negotiate with the seller if it fit and was serviceable.

I don't believe that Chromoly Compo is the real name of the bike. I think someone put those decals on there well after the bike left the factory.

However, I spy bar end shifters, cantilever brakes, and forged rear dropouts. All things that point toward a decent bike.

If it fits and is still available..and in reasonable condition..this one could be a very decent bargain(and well worth upgrading):

https://houston.craigslist.org/bik/d...010509554.html

The BA model was well up in the Lemond pecking order. This one is a 1998 model, Reynolds 525 tubing and stays, 105 group, carbon fork.

Looks like a pretty decent bike. Nice cantilever brakes. Never heard of a Chromoly Compo. Not sure that's even made by Fuji. I would definitely check it out. If it fits, the wheels spin true &, everything works then it's probably worth $100. Looks like it needs new tires and complete overhaul. Good luck.

This bike has a Suntour 2x6 system. Would it be feasible to purchase something like a full Sora groupset and fitting it to this frame?

Thank you, cb400bill. As I said, I’ve never owned or ridden a drop bar road bike.....I think I’d like a bike with STI shifter/brake controls, but I have a lot to learn. I typically only use about 4 different gears on my hybrid on an average ride, so maybe the 2x6 will be sufficient. We’ll see. Thanks again!

Feasible, yes. Cost effective? Not a chance. If you want a newer drivetrain, just seek out a newer bike.

You have been riding a hybrid, so I assume it has upright bars. Try riding your new purchase, with drop bars before making a decision on how to modify the bike.

To answer your question cb400bill, I’m down to just over 5’7” from a bit over 5’10” several years ago.😀 Getting old does that to some, I’m told.
I’ve decided to pass on the Fuji and be on the lookout for a steel “10 speed” that I can tear down and rebuild with the components I want, don’t think the Suntour route is the way I want to go.
Thank you all for the help and information that you’ve given to this old newbie!

Fuji was contracted to build for different touring companies. Maybe this is one of them.

If you don't like drop bar bikes you can always convert one to an upright rider. All you need is some new parts. Not that hard to do. ie:

+1 on this. This is a quality frame, 105 is a solid groupset but frame is worthy of anything you ever want to put on the bike. If you really want STI shifters, something like this would be bettter than purchasing an older bike and assembling an STI group. The caveat is that Lemond geometry is a bit "stretched out", and this bike already has a very long stem, so you might need to purchase a shorter quill stem for a nominal amount of $.
