Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Seriously, I don't see any reason to worry about weight unless you are a) in a super-competitive group, b) are at optimal weight, c) are at optimal fitness and d) plan to climb all day.

I could stand to lose 15 lbs but I have carbon bottle cages because they look cool.

Yesterday I upgraded my multi-tool to a fancy Topeak model that weighs 1/2 as much. Not sure why but I can't wait to get out today and see how it feels in my seat pack.

Oh no, this is how it starts!!

My CF weighs in around 17 lbs while both steel bikes are in the 20-21 lb range. I notice the heavier wheels on the steel bikes more than anything. Of course when I hit the mountains I notice every bit of weight and the CF bike is the ride of choice!

Twice in the last week I've been talking to people about my vintage Panasonic and they've reached over to pick it up. Both times they were amazed with what it weighs. Not because it's so light, but because it weighs about 30 pounds. And I've got it down from the 33 pounds it originally weighed when I purchased it.

Doesn't matter to me. It rides like a Cadillac and it gets me from point A to point B quick enough to satisfy me.

I've got lighter bikes for when I'm in the mood.

That's heavy. I don't think I've had a bike that weight for 10 years.

Even my 56cm alloy roadie/commuter with entry level parts is less than that.

Would you go for an 18.5 lbs bike with a 53/39 over a 21.5lbs bike with 50/34 for climbs?

No. HTFU and climb harder.

Seriously though ... a 39 should be perfect for almost every climb so I'll take the lighter bike
.

My Jamis Dragon- 853 FRAME- cromo fork- weighs 24 lbs with a side stand 26" wheels-Kozmik Lite tires(which are a bit thin walled and tend to tear).
I'm 60 now-and still weigh bike stuff-
It is a sickness- but I can't help it.

A friend of mine and I just weighed three relatively high end bikes using a Park tool scale. We didn't take bottle holders, saddle bags or pedals off (there were no bottles in holders). Here are the results:

One was a very high end titanium bike, small size with dura ace groupe, zipp 404 clinchers PowerTap hub, speedplay pedals, alpha q fork with cf steerer I believe, and fsa cf bars. The bike weighed just over 19 lbs.

The other bike was a CF frame with SRAM Red groupe, aluminum bars, custom wheels with older PowerTap Pro+ hub, two plastic bottle holders, look keo pedals, frame pump and saddle bag with a tube and co2 pump. The bike weighed just under 19 lbs.

The third bike was a very high end cf frame (60 or 62 size), cf cranks, full ultra, zipp 404 clinchers with high end power tap hub - I don't recall model, full ultra - latest model, cf bars stem and seat post, leyzne frame pump, small saddle bag with one or two tubes and two cf bottle cages. I believe it weighed slightly over 19 lbs but let's say 19 lbs. This is a '10 top of the line frame from a major bike company.

I was surprised by the weights but not too much. These bikes were weighed with pedals, bottle holders and saddle bags. The way typical cyclists ride their bikes. Typical BF wankers probably take everything off their bikes including tires, pedals and bar tape, and brag about their 15lb. Bike to their loser friends, but most people ride their bikes with pedals and a small saddle bag with a spare tube. A pound difference in bike weight isn't going to mean much to 99% of the cyclists on this site. Weighing your bike with no pedals, saddle bag or bottle cages is of little value if the bike can't be ridden.

My 2 CF bikes with two cages and pedals weight 19lbs and the other 17. The 19 lb is 61cm and the 17lb is a 59. The 19lb bike has a compact and the 17 a standard double. There is no difference in either bike I can see riding around here but maybe in some mountains it would add up a little.

My old, heavy steel '92 Davidson Impulse with old, heavy stock Wolber wheels and 18-year-old, heavy Look pedals; alloy stem and Cinelli bars weighs in at 22 lbs. My buddy, who has a brand CF Bottecchia, picked up my bike yesterday after a ride and said, "Wow, your bike sure is heavy." His bike probably weighs 19-20 lb...

I weighed my steel 1984 Trek 420 today at the LBS. 23.1 pounds. How much do those 20 pound bikes cost these days anyway??*

*Actually, the reason I was in the LBS in the first place was to test ride a CAAD10 and a Super Six. Honestly, as nice as they were to ride, especially the improved shifting, I don't think I can justify the price of a new bike!

My Synapse with pedals and cages: 15.8

Pretty cheap to get it to that point with Craigslist searching. I dropped about 2lbs for under $500 after selling the old stuff.
