After 6 days without electricity, which happens fairly often where I live, I find the monthly or yearly plans a bit frustrating.

I'm currently on Rouvy, but am not in love with it.

what do you suppose would be a reasonable price per mile (or km)? @ ~$15/mo for me that comes to about 3 cents per mile. sounds good to me but i have a hard time thinking you can build a business on that.

Just to clarify, I am thinking of this as an additional option among several forms of subscription.

Right now I pay month to month and don't ride indoors between April and November, so I purchase 4 months out of the year, and get bombarded with special offers for a discounted annual subscription that would result in me paying more. But if I had an annual subscription where my distance, or time, or whatever, was metered (like a utility), I would buy that, and would probably use it more.

Distance wouldn't work very well, because it would be a lot cheaper per hour climbing vs riding on the flat. It would also get more expensive the faster you rode! I suppose they could charge by time, but that's kind of what they do anyway. They just make it a simple $15 or whatever for the whole month. Metering hourly seems like an unnecessary complication at that price level. I don't think any of them attempt it.

I wonder if there are any that permit you to ride off-line, with downloaded rides in the absence of internet? (I assume it is the same answer.)

This time, at least, we didn't lose internet.

Maybe I should modify one of my trainers to make it a battery charger.

Sufferfest/Wahoo Systm allows you to download rides and ride them offline, or at least they used to allow it before Wahoo bought them out. But that is also $15/mo. It doesn't seem like that much money to me. You can't even buy a pizza for that anymore.

I think $15/mo is what I am paying for Rouvy.

That isn't the problem. Winter in the Santa Cruz CA mountains = frequent power failures, so it is frustrating to pay and to be blocked by mother nature.

When I lived in Cambridge (UK), they sold (insanely expensive) pizza with toppings like tuna and kernels of sweet corn.

The Brits never really figured out how to cook.

You can't access them without an internet connection.

I double-checked it on my laptop just now. You need a connection to log in. I also tried opening the app, then the downloaded file while connected, and then turning it off. It needs a continuous connection.

This was one of the reasons I went to Rouvy in the first place (my hope that some form of the above might work).

Are you suggesting that the classic “pizza con tonno e mais dolce” is not the height of sophisticated cuisine?

I have had a power extension fitted off our solar system (not as lovely and automated as a Tesla powerwall but also nowhere near as expensive) so that I can run a few things in a power cut, primary focus being trainer, router and wifi mesh

So did you seriously expect that you could download all the routes and then ride them offline without a subscription? I guess they thought of that scenario.

You could try the free apps like Indie Velo and MyWhoosh, but I suspect they will all need an online server connection to function.

Edit: I just re-read this and your premise is false; i.e., I do have a subscription (and logged in before turning off the internet).

I posted in answer to your previous suggestion that it didn't work off-line, and after that, I decided I had better make sure that I was right. I didn't expect it to work, but I hadn't tested all possible scenarios.

I suspect that is true. I'm subscribed to Rouvy at the moment, so will just stick with that, or ride outside (It was nice today).

Edit: Something must have changed, because I tried pretty hard to do this (downloaded a video, verified it worked while on-line, turned off internet, it immediately throws the error captured in the screen-shot I posted above).

None of the platforms I know of offer pay per distance models. It would be tricky to implement with the usual crop of payment gateways that are used, same as pay-per-ride.

With FulGaz you can download the ride videos, then use those completely offline. Handy if you don't know when you'll be without power. Just keep a handful of your favourite courses downloaded as a backup.

IndieVelo is free, but you cannot use it offline as far as I'm aware.
