Since the last several rides have basically been a handful of my generic routes I haven't posted much. Not that many miles either so mentioning them sometimes seems a little unnecessary. The highlight was my wife riding down to Seal Beach with me yesterday. About a year and a half ago she was hit on her bike and although the physical scars have healed, she still has a lot of anxiety regarding riding when there are cars around. So, I've tried to make her feel comfortable by limiting the rides to the SGRT (no cars) or somewhere around here where she can feel safe. Yesterday was a bit of a breakthrough, she did admit that she's feeling better about riding and the anxiety is subsiding. I'm really thankful for that. I'd like to get her back up to 30 miles rides by the time summer rolls around.

While my daughter was at softball practice at nearby Brookside Park, I did laps around the Rose Bowl loop. It was cold...and dark...and lonely. I got in a good workout of some FTP tempo spiced up with a few hard intervals, but it was a mental struggle to get a 20mi/1hr ride completed. A cycling friend (nickname K-Mart) has a guideline that he won't ride if the temperature is less than his age. This was definitely under the K-Mart line. I should have done a Zwift session in my garage.

So, what was that... like 7 times around in an hour? 20 miles an hour...!.. we are old now.. you can slow down. I ride through there once in a while but never make a full revolution.

When I got back on my bike in Dec '19, I told myself that I wasn't going to ride like I did when I was a racer-boy 15 years earlier, always looking to get stronger and go faster. So far, my success with that has been pretty minimal. I enjoy pushing my body, and feeling it work hard. There is a familiarity in the suffering.

Left the house at first light headed east over Santiago, Live Oak & Trabuco Cyn Roads. Beautiful sunrise not a cloud in sight. Light winds & light traffic. The hills were glistening with a rich green patina from the recent rains. Wound my way back via Santa Margarita Pkwy/Portola back home. Ended up with almost 84 miles.
Beautiful day on the road!

Got out on a sunny morning in the local Puente Hills. Enjoyed Turnbull and Powder Canyons and worked my way through Murphy Ranch.

One of the better days to ride in SoCal that I can remember. Clear to partly cloudy skies with a light breeze in the low 60's. Stayed local as is my MO. Managed a metric and 7.2K of climb. Think I will give the Tour of Big Bear a try in August. Need something to target for better fitness and a reward.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think I read every 4 mph of headwind is like a 1% grade?

Due to a schedule change for my daughter's softball games, my anticipated Sunday morning of 50-60 miles with no particular time constraints got squeezed down to a back-home time of 10:30. I decided to join a Coffee Ride group (typically 10-20 riders, mostly 50+ ex-racers), knowing that their schedule was pretty predictable, and would get back home at the prescribed time if I skipped out on the refreshment segment. The first half of the ride is steady, easy, social, and generally a very orderly double-wide line. The second half gets spicy as we roll though the foothills of the San Gabriels through Duarte, Monrovia, Arcadia, and Sierra Madre. With no rides since Wednesday night, I was feeling pretty fresh and frisky, and went after PRs on a few of my favorite segments. I was nearly my best on the first one, but my Wahoo died before the end of the second....booo!!! I'm pretty sure I was on a PR pace. I can feel my body reaching a new level of power output for mid-length (3-10 min) efforts. Despite being shorter than I hoped (38 miles), it was a good day on the bike, and got to chat with some good folks.

So this weekend was the culmination of my tryout of one of the Strava CTS training plans. I chose the 45min climb plan, which basically had three weeks of building workouts and then a taper week. My goal was to PR the GMR climb. I'm happy to report that I beat my pre-training block PR by 2:15, dropping my time to 46:31. My previous PR was back in October, and I actually think I lost a little fitness over the winter, so the gain might have been closer to 3:20 if I compare myself to an attempt in January. I felt great on the climb and even felt like I could have pushed just a tad harder.
After relishing in victory, I climbed the rest of the way up Glendora Ridge Road for a total of 47miles and about 5,600ft climb. I spent a bit more time soaking in the sights of the mountains... It was a beautiful day

dropped off the car for a little repair in metro san diego and headed south by southeast, riding through bonita, spring valley and la mesa for a total of 40 miles.
nice to see the greenery and the burgeoning wildflowers. a bit breezy but clear and in the mid-60's.
picked up the garmin varia rvr315 radar (radar only...w/o the built-in red flashing tailight) recently and this was the first ride with it. performed as advertised when
paired with the garmin 520+. will definitely come in handy on descents. picked up and recognized everything (including motorcycles) except a dude on an e-bike
that passed me going about 22 mph (i was going 19 mph).

Thirty five miles, out and back through Hidden Valley. Was a bit cooler than I wanted and never did peel off anything. Looking forward to warmer weather this coming weekend.

I loved that Hidden Valley loop when I lived in TO and would loop around Westlake, to HV to Camarillo, and Moorpark, sometimes to Simi Valley.

Another generic 27 miles down to the Queen Mary and back.
I'm about ready to break out of my rut. The wife and I have been hiking a lot this month and when I got on the bike I couldn't believe how it helped increase my leg strength. I want to do a a few more hilly training rides and then give the GMR a try. I'm not expecting to make it to the top, but I have to see how far I can make it.

So the question is when to shut it down when you are starting to fade versus pushing yourself to improve one's fitness?
So I did another local metric century with 7.3K of climb.
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35529688
On the last climb up the west side of Turnbull Cyn I felt faint and my pulse was slightly elevated. I rested for five minutes, had a gel and some maple syrup and finished a bottle of Propel. It was 90F degrees but I did not feel overheated. My power was way down and my speed dropped down to 5-6 mph but I soldiered on and made the top and stopped at the home with the drinking fountain as I had run out of water and was plenty thirsty.
I tried to dismount and my right hamstring went into spasm. I massaged it and after several seconds it stopped. So I rested and dropped my head and passed out but fell to my right into the foliage. Pro tip: I also pissed myself but I was next to a drinking fountain and no one was around.
I managed to free myself and ambled over to the drinking fountain and downed about a quart and was able to hold down an oatmeal bar. Resting on the brickwork, I doused myself with another quart of H2O when a kind man stopped and offered me an energy drink and a ride home. I guess I really looked like I was done. I passed on his kind gestures and checked my bike. I likely bent my RD hanger and adjusted the barrel adjuster to limp home another 4 miles.
Any ride where you can get home in one piece is a good ride. Hydration, nutrition and ride planning in the heat was a total failure on my part as was my judgment.
Lesson learned!
