So, watching this video, I get the following impression. He did some interviews and the media twisted his words. Armstrong and Trek reacted to what the media said--not what he said. Which is what will happen. So, instead of blaming Trek for reacting to fake news, maybe blame the media for stirring up controversy. In other words, take it with a grain of salt.

As for me, I don't buy bikes because of famous racers. I buy brands that I'm familiar with and that are comfortable when I'm on them. In this case, Trek is the brand that I own. I've owned Schwinn and Next before. And various homemade bikes when I was a kid.

Are there really no other shops in this analogy? It would be very odd to imagine a singular shop selling stuff that few people are interested in buying, with no competition. If Trek really is your only bike shop in town then I can only conclude that Trek bikes are actually quite popular there.

I imagine if you have good sales figures, the brands don't care. We have a shop around here that sells CDale, Trek, Spesh, and Cervelo off the floor.

Mellow Johnny’s website doesn’t list Specialized (or Allied):

It truly is a common story. In all areas. Just look at stuff done with the NFL, NBA, International Football, Wrestling, UFC, and even UIL and NCAA too.

PROFESSIONAL SPORTS is a BUGGER!

Never had a TREK, but if a dirt cheap one ever passes my way I'll snap it up...

Here is a guy who always plays the victim, his teams always did him wrong. His teammates were never loyal. Had to leave the sport because of doping, although it’s been rampant since he entered the professional leagues and for decades before. His original LeMond cycles was broke before Trek bought it and he blamed his father. Trek dropped him for various reasons including it was not profitable blame’s Armstrong and Trek lawsuits result. Develops a private ski resort and says his partners mislead him and ripped him off lawsuits resulted. Starts a bike trainer company goes broke and blames the distributor and marketing arm. Starts a few more bike companies all end up in lawsuits with Greg declaring innocence. Supposedly forms a company with a new type of carbon frame building system of course ends up in bankruptcy and and lawsuits. Couple years ago we had an E bike company started by Greg people have invested and it’s been crickets ever since.

Fact check: Merckx never raced on a Trek.

My OP wasn't meant to be about Lance Armstrong per se but for a timeline of his career, including doping, this is informative: https://www.espn.com/olympics/cyclin...final-collapse

It was. That was the whole idea of the post. It is fine, people love to talk L.A. because he will whip up a storm of conversation. This had nothing really to do with Trek or anything it was designed specifically to rehash the L.A. debate. That is fine, I am not attacking you for it, people love to talk about that situation and it is an interesting situation. Love him or hate him it was an interesting time and it easy to get people to talk about.

Buddy bought a spec hard tail new from them 3 years ago. Pretty positive I saw an Allez there the last time I was there as well. Allied that I saw might have been a trade in, but it looked brand new.

Maybe it was Colin’s?

That's a tough sell, given that the only thing in your first post is a video link with LA front and center.

I too thought (and still do think) that the opening post was a swipe at Lance Armstrong. If the OP wanted to explain why they don't wish to buy a brand, they could have discussed that in the opening post along with the video that probably 98% of the people reading this thread didn't watch because it appears to be a LA dig. But the OP of this thread isn't the only person to post like this. Many posters in A&S seem to drop a link in the opening post without any thoughts of their own on the subject.
