You're right, in that the shifting experience will be particularly lousy. I toured on the same bike in 62 cm for a week last month with upright bars, and I didn't at all like the acrobatics needed to shift. I'm not riding it again until I've put the drop bars back on.

The Velocipede co-op in Baltimore has an early '70s Eisentraut Limited frame/fork. It was too big for me, or I would have bought it. I am 6' 3", and I think it measured 66cm or so. Just a heads up.

Mercian Vincitore Custom Road-Fixed frameset, 64cm c-c, built 2005. I replaced the Nitto 90deg stem in the pix with a -17deg Dura-Ace, so the stem looks a little less slammed now. I'll have to do a minor re-shoot. This sucker fits fat rubber, 32s now, will try some 35s later this week:

Very sensible build. Look at the Mercian saddle height relative to the bar height. A bit to low on the bars for me, but still it looks like thought went into the bike fit. The head tube extension is very subtle, the ornate lug helps hide it. Those lugs are beautiful. I don't like the Chris King headset on that bike or the interrupter levers, but I love the bike. The single speed makes my knees hurt. Run that retro-direct with two gears!

If you're like me you use Thomson seat posts with no-setback because TALL bikes already have too much top tube to use a traditional setback post. That was the other thing I noticed. Stupid tiny clown frame builders.

What kind of steel tubing is in the frame? Are the frame tubes made by Ishiwata or Tange? (Ishiwata will be on the steer tube.)

My first properly fitting bike was a 27" frame Fuji Royale.
I was rear-ended on it in January 1982 by an SS396 Chevelle.
While having the frame rebuilt (rear triangle replacement) I purchased a 27" Fuji Royale II.
I still own both bikes, but do not ride either.
I then moved to 63cm Cannondales in 1986. I own 15 of them or so.
In addition, I own 3 27" ST 400's w, caliper brakes,
A 27" ST400 from 1990 w.canti's,
A 27" ST600 from 1989 w/canti's and 130mm rear spacing
And THE GRAIL, my 1992 27" T1000 w/canti's and 135mm rear spacing.

I also own a custom built 67cm steel Moseman pure touring bike.

As for racing bikes, in addition to the host of 63's I own a 66cm CAD 3 'Dale
and a pair of 65cm Leader LD717R framed rides.
I actually really like the Leader Bikes. They are comfortable to ride and pretty quick!

Lastly I have a Nashbar racing frame, but I cannot remember what size it is. Maybe only 25"; not sure.

I hope I have not omitted any of the stable.............

Thanks! The deal with the Vincitore is the lugs are hand-cut from blanks. So though they generally tend to all look similar, you may see variations depending on who did the carving/building. There's a Vincitore Special that adds giant-axx tangs to the bb shell.

Scrolling down from the top I was surprised to see the single speed on a Mercian. I think of them mostly as touring bikes. I see they also did the same thing Serrotta did with my head tube. Joining the top tube a few cm's lower in order to add some stability and keep a level top tube.

I had a Mercian King of Mercia that was one size too small for me. The lugs were not as pretty as yours but still pretty nice. I really liked the wrap around seat stay.

Hmmm. I wonder if that's my old bike that I sold and shipped to San Francisco. I thought mine was a '72 though, but it had the unusual downtube cable stops added. The decals were worn and had a tiny dent on the top tube so it was a good candidate for a repaint. Small world for big bikes.

Before you give up on the concept, there is at least one way to get a tall Italian frame: go to the factory. In 1990 my brother (6'5") and I (6'7") visited DeRosa, Cinelli and another frame builder in Milan. We wound up meeting most of the DeRosa family, getting measured and ordering frames from them. They are great people and totally devoted to the sport. I have a 66 cm CC Columbus SPX made by the father and founder, Ugo. I am currently refurbishing it and will post pics as soon as I'm finished. So my experience is that visitors are welcome, but especially customers with special needs. All the shops we visited were willing to build custom for us.

My city bike is a 28" Panasonic DX-2000 which is an absolute pleasure to ride. A beauty of a city bike now and I get a lot of questions about it. I bought this in 1978 at Bloor Cycle in Toronto and rode it for many many miles before buying a 27" Cannondale Touring bike from Maple Cyclery in Dundas, Ontario. That bike was stolen about 10 weeks after I got it but my insurance company came through and bought me a replacement. Cannondale replaced my original frame in '92 at no charge because of a small crack in the top tube and I've been riding it ever since. I've swapped out every component due to wear and tear but the frame just keeps on keepin on and it's a joy to ride. Cranks are 180 and bars are Cinelli mod 64 44cm. I was 6'8" when I got the Panasonic and I've shrunk an inch with the years and the miles. Enjoying seeing everyone's pictures and hearing a bit about them. Here's to large frame bikes!

Sorry I missed this thread in the beginning.

I have tall frame Peugeot, Schwinn,and a newer Specialized Allez that I bought the frame just because it had an XXL sticker on the downtube!

I plan on opening an e-bike store this spring, with a 2nd goal of selling tall bikes of any kind. I see too many people riding on seatposts that could be flagpoles.

Wow!! Nice Stan Johnson, I new him well in the 70's . He sold me a few bikes back then . One of them I still have. He had a small shop by the harbor in Oxnard California . He isn't doing frames anymore (too bad) , I did some grinding for him when he was building the jigs for those frames. Joe
