Thumbs up/Thumbs down
I think BikeForums needs a thumbs down option. i've read a lot of posts and when someone gets something just absolutely wrong there is no way to indicate this outside of a comment that a new unknowledgeable user may not read because it is further down the chain.
i know about the report option but that does not seem fitting for most posts.

The accepted way to deal with that situation is to reply and explain what you feel the OP got wrong.

Or just not comment at all. Ignoring it will keep contentious arguments from going on. Thumbs up and down are kind of like a mob rule sort of thing that I don't care for. Mobs aren't always right.
In most cases the overwhelming replies with more correct information will be what the OP uses. If the OP was to go by the wrong info, and it is truly wrong, then the OP will soon find out for themselves.

I disagree with the thumbs-down proposal.
Tolstoy wrote (give or take a bit for my memory), "Every happy family is alike. Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
Making an analogy to forums and posts, if someone writes a post that explains my position so well that I can only post something inane, think "Ditto," or hit the like button, I'll hit the like button. If I disagree with that post, the poster can expect that if I have to respond, I'll explain why I disagree. Thumbs-down or dislike is a shortcut that doesn't elicit any reason, any thought; it's just a way to pile on to a post without adding anything but a number to a "too lazy to generate any thought process behind a response" heap.

I want a thumb neutral option and I think we need to also consider the 8 other fingers on our hands. The whole thumbs up or down debate never takes them into account.

The last thing this place needs is a less articulate way to express disagreement.

We already have a Like button so we are halfway there. Don’t know if this off the shelf board will accommodate a Dis-like.

Why are we only talking about thumbs?
There are 8 other fingers. A couple of which could be used to express intense disagreement or dislike.

Thumbs up is a very negative situation to me in cycling terms. It means I've had a mechanical and am needing to hitch a ride with someone.

I've definitely posted things that were wrong. I've also learned a lot from people posting corrections of those things. A thumbs down would have told me nothing and I wouldn't have known that I should acknowledge my mistake for someone looking at the thread.
Discussion means putting words to our disagreements, not posting insulting symbols when we disagree.
