Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know that's not what you're referring to, but I just had to play along. I should be more observant on the OP dates since people are digging up posts from many years ago!

I may as well add mine... I'll climb pretty much anything on a 39x26, although I cheated and lowered it a bit to 38x28 for the end of Everest Challenge.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure you and WaterRockets are actually banished to the racing forum, so us weenies can develop self loathing on our own. It's not really cycling zen when you have evidence of inferiority.

Hey Tugger...

What would you ride on the hillclimbs...

I would not be able to turn over the 39x26...

The times I've ridden on long climbs (Highlander, Whiteface Mountain, Crank the Kanc, Southern Tier stuff) I've been able to get up and over with a standard double and a 12T-25T cassette. Being spindly and waif-like helps. There isn't anything around here that I consider testing, unless I make a loop that includes the street where the climb is a dozen times (Coolidge Street, Village Walk Circle).

The only time I use something smaller than a 39Tx25T is on Mount Washington, where I stick a chopped up Shimano XTR FC-M952 crankset in my rig with 22T-32T TA Specialties chainrings.

If you aren't the climbing type, you can't go wrong with a compact double and a 12T-27T cassette.

34/25 most of the time, 34/29 for nasty climbs.

34x30, and I used it this morning. I usually stick with 34x23 on this particular route, but something didn't feel right in the hams as I started the last 2 mile who's your father. They were feeling tweaky, so I called the 30 up for duty and spun away.

38x32, it helps to have the easier gear when legs aren't up to par.
