Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sounds like you got a bug then, not just questionable seafood or the like. Get well soon!

Ocean Beach Pier report. I think this was yesterday, if so I'm surprised the big water is still hanging around over there!

These are the days we live for. But we have to put up with the rest of the year to gain our reward. I would be happy with months like this, instead of the week or two we get, but I have no inclination to relocate atm.

Back in my surfing years I would have have been all for this. Went out at S Turns back in 2005, a hurricane was off the coast. Some of the cleanest waves I have ever seen but also the biggest. All the pros were there and camera people from all the magazines. Anyways, I decide I am gunna go for it so start paddling out. First waves comes, I duck dive under, second wave comes and It looked like a freaking house, it broke right on top of me. I tried to duck dive it but in my hyperventilating state I failed. It knocked me pretty deep under, I didn’t know which way was up or down, took me at least 40 seconds to get back to the top. My board was tomb stoning, wish someone got a picture of that. Once the ocean spit me back out, I crawled onto the beach and some old guy handed me a beer. I did not go back out that day.

So in 2024 this classic doesn't apply to you? Kudos! I love this song but never investigated the title or meaning of the lyrics. I just assumed they covered it or took it as their own after changing a word or two.

I should grab the CD, if I can find it, and see if the lyrics are included.

Im glad you asked. It’s about anything that springs to one’s mind . . . within reason. (We once had a guy in here who interpreted that concept literally and became a major pain in the ass posting every every one of his often wacky thoughts. That didn’t work out well for him when all was said and done.)

Think of Addiction as a Foo thread within the Road forum, where one can discuss all manner of topics without being off-topic. Personally, I think a reasonable goal would be to aim for a reasonable balance of topics. Specifically, at times last year I think the thread got too bogged down with cycling issues, which outnumbered and outweighed everything else. Among other things, humor suffered, and more than one person has privately complained to me about their dissatisfaction with the content of the thread. They said things had gotten very boring and the thread just wasn’t fun anymore, especially since the passing of Pcad, whom most know was all about fun and comical banter.

I see that as easily fixed. Before getting too cycling centric we might possibly remember that we are in a cycling forum where a topic will almost certainly find a wider body of interested souls outside of Addiction than what’s available inside Addiction. Let me be clear right away, I’m not saying we shouldn’t discuss anything cycling related in Addiction, but rather let’s try to find a balance where it’s more sporadic or, for example, it doesn’t take up one or two whole pages of chatter at a time. That’s a bit much for any topic. Move it out to the cycling forum where more help is available and where more can enjoy. There’s a big difference historically between the purpose and usage of the Water Cooler/Chit Chat thread and the purpose and usage of the Addiction thread. I definitely don’t think it would be much fun if all of the Road Cycling topics gradually migrated into the Addiction thread. It could happen. Some might say it’s happening now.

I realize of course everyone can’t be as witty as Pcad, and the thread will never be the same without him, or Coasting, but we can try at least to be a little more considerate of a wider audience.

I'll second that. I generally expect at least two 3-4 day heat waves with temps close to or over 100 every September/October. They last longer then because the ocean isn't cold enough to get the onshore AC working too quickly. But this year, there was ONE "Excessive Heat Warning" which turned out to be mostly a dud for us. Oh, it got hot farther South and East, but we were beyond the range. Put it this way - at no point in the last two years did I desperately wish for AC.

I guess your near drowning experience must have been in another year and not 2005. If that were the case you would have been 18 hence the underage drinking comment.
