Chain Stay Protector

What do you guys do to protect the chain stay from chain slap?

Is there a standard type or brand of protective strip or tape you habitually use? That doesn't get tatty, damage paint, trap moisture, etc?

I'm sure some one sells a leather or carbon fiber protector for $40 . . .

That's a good question. I hesitate to use anything that is held on with a double-stick tape adhesive. I can well imagine it pulling the paint off the frame when I try to remove it.

I put a leather one on my Rivendell because it's a Rivendell (or maybe I should have wrapped it in hemp twine?). It wasn't too expensive:

Elkhide Chainstay Protector, Hand Cut

Or you could cut a piece from an older leather coat or backpack from the thrift store and glue it on.

Someone suggested in a previous post getting #20 clear vinyl sheet from JoAnn fabrics. I followed that recommendation & for less than ten bucks I've got lifetime supply.

Does the job. I just removed a 3 layer wrap of the stuff from a 4 year old, not well maintained commuter / mtb I bought off CL. Came off nice and no mess or damage to the chainstay decal or paint. Just that it didn't look really cool.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

It depends on how much protection you need. For my road bike, nothing, and yes the chainstay does get a ding once in a while, but not enough to worry about. If I did worry, I'd use helicopter tape, and replace it as needed.

For a mtn or cross bike that sees rough service (and has small chainrings) I split a piece of vinyl tubing, slip it on and use 3 zip ties to keep it home. Not fancy, but works.

I don't wrap, just lay down one strip of 3/4" wide tape. It is the closest thing to the factory or after market vinyl torpedo shaped protectors, but costs next to nothing rather than $3.

I bought a sheet of "chrome" Mylar with an adhesive back at a sign making shop for another project. But I started using it to cut chain-stay protectors from. It's nice as you can cut it to fit and it wraps well. And it's chrome.

Good idea. At that price just rip and replace as often as you want. With vinyl tape in so many colors, probably even clear, a custom and clean chainstay protector is a no-brainer.

I could use a few, I tried, 3 then 1 , both times I got the message " order exceeds stock on hand".
Bummer.
There is a guy on eBay from the UK who has similar, the price is tolerable, the shipping is not.
Uses the eBay global package service, only exceeds the item price by 3X...
I have an inquiry to see if he has multiples and would send them in one box... Hoping.

Yes, this is the clear, thick plastic self-adhering film originally used as CS protector on many bikes.

A cheap DIY one is to cut an old inner tube into a strip ~2 cm wide, then wrap the CS with in, tucking the end under the next-to-last wrap and pulling tight, then cut it off so no excess poking out. Try to hide this under/behind CS and you won't even see it.

Hey that's a pretty bike! Steel with a quill stem, brifters and a triple up front - and 3! bottle holders? How tall are you man?

I need side-release bottle holders on my mtb, and my road bike just barely handles short bottles in regular holders.

1-LizardSkin's clear protector. Cheap, easy, nearly invisible.

2-Soma's chrome-look protector. Cheap, easy, pretty.

3-Leftover handlebar wrap. Just kidding.

Thanks. It's a luxury liner!

As for my height, I'm at the age where the numbers are going down, not up.
