I need a new crankset for my Panasonic Sport 500. I don't know what to get. I have been hunting Ebay. I would prefer to spend under $50. There are several options on Ebay for that amount. I recently bought a Vuelta crankset but had to return it because it stuck out too far and wasn't aligning with the rear cassette. I don't want to go through that hassle again. Does anyone know what crankset is compatible with the Sport 500? I am using the standard spindle and cup setup. I am capable of changing the spindle. Should I consider using a cartridge BB? If so, which one will fit? Do I need special tools to install a cartridge BB?

Do you know how long the spindle is? The 500 is a low end bike, and my very unscientific sampling is that the low end bikes then to have long spindles
that stick the crank out quite a distance - well at least to my preference. I will give away the 125 spindles because I favor ones at least as short as in the 115 to 118 size
range.

A Panasonic most likely has a ISO tapper which can effect the distance the crank sits from the frame. Don't know Vuelta, but I am guessing it was is also a ISO tapper.

Anyway, I am thinking you might be better off thinking about the spindle length then the crank if you are concerned about it sticking out too far.

There are some reasonably nice cranks listed in the for sale section at OK prices. Actually better then what you might normally find on a 500.

Oh yes, I know the spindle is too long. I have done my best to find a shorter spindle but have had now luck. I am wanting to get a bb cartridge but am not sure if one will fit. I checked out the post you provided and posted that I am interested. Do you know if that bb would fit in a panasonic 500?

They are both ISO. 24x1 threading. Left threaded drive side. Pretty sure they are both 68mm wide. You can confirm the with on you BB.

You should look at the UN26 cartridge bottom bracket. It is your cheapest option.

Are you saying a UN26 will fit on a Panasonic? Will it also fit on a Lotus?

Japanese bikes have always been English threaded, as far as I know. I've never heard of an Italian-threaded Japanese-made bike.

The crank you're using determines the length of the BB spindle you need.
