Proper pronuctiatio of SHIMANO?

I've always pronounced SHIMANO as Shi (soft I) man o. I've heard it pronounced Shim an o. Reading the other threads it seems as if the 'i' should be like 'e' in 'she'. Does the proper pronunctiation sound like She man o?

Cheers from Miele Man

Like most languages transliterated into English, the i sounds like like a long e. And in Japanese, often names have the second syllable accented, so it this case it's she-MON-oh.

I've never heard any (non-Asian) American say it any other way than shim-ON-oh, but as usual we're wrong and ignorant. Yee-HAH!

Oh, I'd say mispronunciation is a fairly universal problem for those who attempt crossing international borders; I'd just like US to be better and smarter than everyone else.

F'rinstance, when I have a European native check into the hotel I run and ask about using the Wi-Fi; he invariably pronounces it "Wifey."

"No, dude, you cannot use my Wifey."

Around here in the tri-state region, in the eighties it was she-man-oh. But lately, like other non-stressed inner long-e's, it's been moving toward a schwa sound: shuh-man-oh.
