Hopefully, the police have someone waiting at the owner's house.

Of course, if the car is reported stolen, it's another story.

Pretty extraordinary footage. Glad both kids somehow missed being run over (under the tires).

Local chop shops?
Barbecued car on the beach?

With all the cell phones, I'm surprised someone didn't follow the car until the police caught up. I thought that might be what the car that drove through the accident scene a few seconds after the accident might have been doing.

These days, it should be easy enough to disprove a false report of stolen car. Just see where the owners and all authorized users cell phones pinged at the time of the Hit&Run.

That's IF the owner had his cell phone with him (assuming he was driving), and IF he doesn't claim he had left the cell phone in the console the night before and it s stolen with the car. Putting a phone in the car at the time of the crime, isn't the same as putting a person in the car.

For example, I rarely take my cell phone with me when I leave home. I have it mainly as a cheaper land line, and take it with me ONLY when I have a specific reason to do so.

Of course, if the owner bears a resemblance to the desciption of the driver, and other evidence can place him in the car then it should be possible to connect the dots.

But there's always the possibility that the car WAS stolen, which may be why the driver couldn't hang around.

We can speculate forever, but I just as soon let the local police do their jobs and wait to hear how it all pans out.

Also easily provable if the phone was used after the Hit&Run by the owner, unless you think the thief returned the car and phone afterwards.

Another IF. There's all kinds of possibilities, and we can speculate until the swallows return to Capistrano. I just don't choose to, and will let those involved do their jobs, and await the outcome (if any).

And, yes, I am more the exception than the rule in being happy to be unconnected as much as practical. I suspect it's partly my age and being used to being disconnected for most of my life. The other part is that having had my own business and needing to be available to others almost 24/7, I relish being off the leash an a way that most people couldn't imagine.

you figure a car thief knows how to drive a car. maybe it was a stick & they didn't know, or forgot how to hit the clutch for a stop?

Why harp at me for the IF side comments when you started the IFs?

It looks like the SUV involved in the hit & run (can't quite call it an accident) has showed up. I'm surprised it wasn't torched.

SUV believed to have been involved in Pasco hit-and-run involving teen on bike located | WFLA.com

I presume most of the damage was due to hitting stuff other than the kid.

Oh, I can imagine... at one time in my career, I was leashed by both pager and cell phone. The pager ensured that I was never able to hide in a "dead zone." Ugg.

This fatal hit-and-run was also by someone driving a stolen car. Never seen any update, so must still be unsolved.

I'm not sure how they identified the thieves so quickly in this case. Cell phone photos?

From what I'm reading, at least one has been apprehended. They're still hunting for the second one.

Bail was set lower than I would have expected ($10,500). Damages to at least 2 vehicles and 1 or 2 bicycles, fences, and mailboxes will likely exceed that amount.

These days, it takes very little time to run finger prints. That is likely how they know he was the driver.

True,

But as far as I can tell, they identified the thieves before the SUV was recovered.

Once they had it, they likely would have had plenty of additional forensic evidence.

Plus it's a heck of a lot quicker to ask "do these prints match either of these two guys?" than "who in all the state databases do these prints match?"

They could have left evidence or caught on video where they stole the vehicle.
