i think the bars are Wald steel north road style. They came off a Huffy from the garbage.

no clue what I really want to do with this at this point, but it was hard to pass up at $50. Got off the clock early and spent the rest of the day breaking down, cleaning, and greasing this bad boy up. braze ons for all sorts of racks and fenders.

So I finished up the Trek 460. Replaced the wheelset with a nice set of gold annoed Ambrosios on Galli hubs and Michelin Speedium 2, saddle, crankset because the pedal threads were stripped out, freewheel, new chain, new cables, bar tape, and full lube and tune. Total price was just under $100. I ended up giving it to my brother-in-law's girlfriend for Christmas.

I've been puzzling about a build. $150 is a pretty low bar, especially to end up with something I want to ride. I'm not sure where some of you are getting complete setups with Brifters for less than $20**********?

I'd like to do something completely radical, but maybe next year.

Anyway, I found a forkless frame on Craigslist for $100. A big chunk of the budget right there



Now, I have no doubt I could complete A build for $50... but it wouldn't be a bike I'd be happy to put some miles on, and it would need a complete rebuild within months.

I'm thinking a Commuter/Touring/Light Trail/Gravel build.

The frame originally appears to have been setup for 26", but I think it should fit 700c x 32 or so, perhaps a little bigger. 135mm, but I can convert wheels as needed.

Now to hunt for a fork.

Somebody recently mentioned a 1", 700c Cyclocross Carbon Fiber fork with disc brakes from Nashbar for $125. It would blow the budget over the top, but it would compliment the frame quite nicely. I do admit the canti brake posts are odd, but they might be a good bolt location for racks (front and rear, although a bit low on the rear unless added for extra stabilization).

So, I did a 31.8 mile RT ride to retrieve the frame.
Can I count at least half of that (frame in trailer) towards the mileage?

This thread's been off the front page too long, so here's a blurry update on my entry:



Mostly assembled, just have to run the brake cables and hook up the brakes, tape the bars, print out some cheesy stickers and misc.

Unlike the $100 clunker challenge, this time I think I may end up with a bike I actually enjoy riding. Guess that extra $50 goes a long way, huh?

Looking good @Lascauxcaveman. Hope the weather for you is better than here in MA, I daren't take the raw aluminum trek out due to allthe salt on the road.

Boy, howdy, it was nice today! Upper forties and sunny all day. The streets dried up in the afternoon sun and breeze and on my lunch breaks I managed to squeak in 11 miles of shakedown & tuneup riding today. The Nouvo Gran Sport shifty bits are ... a bit, er... primitive, compared to what I'm used to, but the wheelset I dug out of the parts pile for this thing makes it sing. I'm really happy with the way this bike rides.

Now that you mention it, Barhops is literally across the street from where I shot that photo. And several local varieties can be found at The Lazy Moon, which is three blocks away. It used to be Twin Peaks Brewing, which has since moved four miles west to a building with more room for bigger brewing equipment.

Here's mine. A 1980's 12 speed Raleigh Record. I cleaned and re-greased everything, replaced the cables, brake pads, etc. I put 700c wheels on it and 38mm tires, as well as fenders and a rear rack. It rides pretty nice- I tend to ride on a lot of gravel back roads around where I live and haven't had any problems getting around on it. When I switch over to paved roads, it rides pretty easy as well.

Actually the bike is sold.
I am new in buying/fixing/solding bikes and this bike has a funny story. Somebody called me offering me two Schwinn bikes (3 speed, 10 speed, don't remember), we made the deal and then he showed me the Trek frame as is in the picture. I didn't know the value or the name Trek, so I refused him. But he almost bagged me to buy it for 10$. OK, 10 is not too much, the frame looked nice. And the frame was hanging in the basement for half year till I got a set of wheels from somebody. I sold it for 450, but I wish I was smarter to keep it.

^Eh, you got a good price for it; I wouldn't expect it to go for any more than that. Especially with that odd-ball goofy looking luggage rack on front.

Well, I started working on gathering stuff together and assembling.

Unfortunately the lower race on the headset I was going to use was too loose. I'll have to try to hunt down a tighter one or????
I have a burgundy CF fork on one frame that I haven't decided what to do with yet, and it came with a headset. Unfortunately the steer tube is too long, and I don't have the tool to cut more threads. Plus, I haven't decided if I want to separate the matched frame/fork.

Well, I'll figure something out. Perhaps back to the junk store Tuesday.

No doubt, when I start tallying costs, they will add up quickly. So, a few compromises, and the whole thing will look a little funky.

Time to dig around the junk box a bit.



This came off of the Steyr which I've already used the frame on something else... but the whole bike was FREE... so I guess that is the stem and bars. Yes, the famous AVA stem
And, that is the orientation how I got it.

I will be unable to complete my entry due to winter weather conditions and holiday travel of nearly 3 weeks. I had some orange peel problems in repainting the Fuji. There was a brief half day of warm weather in early December, but none since. I do not want to spray enamel indoors and accumulate VOCs. Also the weather conditions are pretty brutal to log any significant mileage.
