I ran up on a coyote on Friday night along the I275 bike path near Romulus Michigan. He bolted down the path in the same direction I was heading. So of course, I tried to draft him at his full speed. He/she was fast! It eventually found a hole under the fence about 75 yards down, went underneath it, and the coyote chase was over.

Part of my regular rides, not sure why it took me so long to grab some pics and post. Today I saw at least a dozen while making my way through the neighborhood. Caught one showing off for the ladies.

I didn’t know that S Californians have gotten into having peacocks on their grounds.
As pretty as they look, their cry is equally ugly and loud.

Funny. As I think I mentioned earlier in this thread, they can make a racket when they want to. I’ve seen (and heard) them in MT.

There's an undeveloped area of a local park where I like to run-walk one of the hills in the early morning hours. Once in a while when out there just about dawn I'll see anywhere from one to three Great Horned owls perched on some leaf-less trees. They seem to sit there and watch me put myself through a bit of suffering for 5-10 minutes before noiselessly flying away into the big mature trees nearby to roost for the day. Very cool. Also the regular selection of coyotes coming through in the early morning, maybe a snake or two in the summer, lizards, skunk, racoons, mice, etc. One big surprise last summer was seeing an American Kestral sitting on a sign post; easy to spot with their small size and colorful head feathers. And most other folks using the area thinks it has no wildlife!

Last winter we went over to Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, outside Decatur, AL. If you think one or two makes a racket, they had had 300-500 sandhills, and a half dozen to a dozen whooping cranes. Funnily enough, the whoopers were hard to hear, but you could hear the sandhills driving in. In the car. With the heat on.

A friend who's hunted for ducks and geese commented, "It's like all those birds know exactly where the refuge is. They fly way up there, and you can hear them, but they don't come down until they're in the refuge!" So I may occasionally hear one or two sandhills flying over while I'm on my bike, but I don't see them.

No pics, darn it, but riding the river levee path recently, a medium-size bird suddenly swooped in front of me, soared, dove, passed again, descending the levee's landside slope then back up. I stopped to watch and saw it was a raptor with a tail shape implying a kite--we get white-tailed kites on the West Coast and in winter, a lot of raptor migration.

Looked away from the river I saw hunkered on a rockpile, a yuuge bird, either a golden or immature bald eagle. That's what the kite had been harassing. Could practically see the "just you wait" thought balloon over the eagle's head. Mind, this all took place maybe 50 yards from the interstate in the middle of downtown.

I was surprised at first, but after a year or so it has become standard. A standard I really enjoy.
Here in Des Moines, pretty much in the middle of town, I see deer all the time. They are so tame as to let you ride right up next to them within a few feet as they are munching next to the trail.
Geese will chase you down. Especially if you pass close to their goslings.
Squirrels wait till you're close before they cross the path, and will bomb you from trees. (I'm sure it's on purpose.)
Turkeys a few times, and i amazingly watched a bobcat stalking a rabbit not too long ago right in the middle of a high snoot residential area I ride through.
Just need a giraffe sighting to complete the menagerie.

Back in the 80's I caught many mink trapping but it is rare to see them in the daytime

Out yesterday riding through some local woods and came across these two in a field full of sheep which they seemed to get along with, I have previously encountered a herd of alpaca on the same road which had got out from another place just further along, just what you expect in east Devon.

A friend had captured him or one of his relatives on a game camera. It’s a shame to lose him.

Mostly deer, rabbits, coyotes, the occasional mountain lion or bobcat. Hawks, egrets, other wetlands birds.

only the rabbits have caused me any alarm, preferring to dart across roads that go downhill just before hard corners. Suicidal little guys.

Funny. I’ve had a couple of them fly close across my path.

Back in 2017 I was riding early in the morning in MT. The sun was low and behind me. A shadow overtook me. Looked up to see an osprey fly just a few feet above my head with a fish in its talons.
