Hi all,


I am reluctantly selling my 83 Protour frameset. Its been a wonderful ride, but I've moved on to a frame that fits wider tires. When I bought it it was in somewhat rough shape cosmetically, I cleaned it up but the paint is still not great. (I clear coated over any bare spots, like on the chainstay, see pics). There is one small dent on the downtube, but it hasn't affected anything in the years I've had it.

I believe I have the brakes, stem and seat post if that makes a difference.


I'd love to sell it on here, not sure what to price it at.

One data point: I paid $225 + shipping for a ProTour 15 (1985?), last year. Paint had been chipped which exposed the chrome below, but no bare metal was visible and zero rust. Frame, fork, headset, and seatpost.

Thanks that's pretty helpful. Would you say yours was slightly better cosmetically?

It had maybe more chips of paint, but no rust or dents.

There are so many nice complete Japanese tourers out there right now, I just don’t see the value in a frame with cosmetic issues.

Maybe my market is just soft. Bought a 1985 Nishiki Cresta a two weeks ago, with first gen DA derailleurs (not original). Second time I owned this bike. $80. And it was for sale for a couple of weeks.

I saw a really nice Pro Tour for $175. Needed refreshed. Passed.

Now the chrome sample should enjoy a chrome premium. My comments are in regards to local sale.

I would tend to agree there are a lot of complete nicer light touring and drop bar Japanese cross bikes on the market in similar condition in the $200-300 price range. It seems really nice examples of frame and fork sets with good cosmetics are going for $200-250 plus shipping. For this one with some dings and paint issues I would say $150-175 if you up for the time and effort and fees of selling ebay it should be noted that shipping costs are up and Ebay charges fees based on the entire purchase price including shipping so you will only clear $125 or so if you go that route. I would say consider offering it here on the forums for $150 plus shipping and see if you get any takers.

Not sure how the Pro Tour compares to the Comp TA (1984, just before the Ironman) and Ironman Master, but I picked up each of these for pretty cheap (I think). The Comp TA is Tange2, Shimano 600 and Araya gold-ish looking rims and silver flake/dark blue metallic paint is near flawless - bought for $200. The Ironman Master (Tange 1) is light green/white fade, has some surface rust spots, but no dents, Shimano 105, bought for $100. I'm in the DC/Maryland area - we see plenty of bikes from this era at seemingly reasonable prices for full, original bikes.

Smaller frame size and time of year may be impacting interest.

Really like the White hood ESR brake levers on the 2nd bike these can for $75 plus on ebay also note the seat is too high for a fluted post check to see it;s not suck and lower a good inch maybe 2 same for the 1st bike.

Thanks zukahn1 ! I didn't know that fluted posts had different limits on min insertion! I'll check that today, hopefully not frozen.. and replace with a different type to get the right height

Fluted posts have minimum insertion marks but they are usually on the non fluted portion. Their issue is mostly that they allow water into the frame and are often stuck if not installed with grease.

I recieved an offer from someone on a ****** thread for $150 (local, so no shipping). That seems to be a fair price, based on the comments here. It also made me realized I've got more sentimental value attached to this frame than I realized, so I'm going t hold on to it for now...

SurferRosa Just for your future reference, the stem on currently is a threadless to threaded stem adapter.

That's actually a pretty solid offer. It's cool though that you have an attachment to it.

I agree (at least on the $100 Ironman)... the $200 Comp TA I felt was a fair deal (it is in near perfect condition though). I'd have to say $150 for the frameset/fork is about as much as I'd expect to get, but if you really like it, it's not worth getting rid of for that amount either ... if you've got the space to store them, hoard on!
