This seems relevant to C&V. I personally don't have any interest in any of noir aesthetic but the history and images are interesting, though I don't think there's anything new there. There is a section to add personal stories about experience with Campagnolo.

The 50th was a hit. I wondered why they let the 75th go without much note. This one does not impress me. From my perspective, even the logo is lacking in creativity.
Hopefully I will be active enough to be interested in the 100th and they have 20 years to get that right.

I think they were busy getting their buts handed to them by shipmano, (atleast that is the reason given in The Dancing Chain) and were trying to get a working index system going.

Personally I would rather have a 50th group, or a NOS '88 Chorus would be nice.

The 50th grouppo was in 1983? The 80th is this year (2013). A 75th anniversary grouppo would have been 2008, and AFAIK, their indexing was working quite well then. Confused

^^ I'm confused too. At the same time I've not bought into the cult of Campy yet, though I appreciate the aesthetics. I still wish they were producing their 3-speed IGH. Now that is something I could get into!

My Nouvo Record set from 1986 has close to 60,000 miles on it without even so much as a hiccup. Original jockey wheels, chain rings, bearings, and brake pads. Campagnolo for life.

I'm actually looking forward to getting my Mike Appel frameset built. It's going to be a Campy build. The only other single road bike I have with derailleurs is my Alpine which is a Mavic build.

+1. I went from Athena 8 speed to 105/Ultegra 8 speed to Daytona 9 speed. I sold the Shimano and now I am building up an Olmo with all Campy Chorus 10 speed. I will keep the Chorus for the rest of my life.

I think you're a little mixed up. Look at the text of the Rapha logo and tell me again who is trying to emulate who.


With regard to the 80th anniversary. The website speaks for itself. This was a low budget and half a$$ed effort on their part and not fitting of the heritage of the company. The original anniversary group came at a time when campagnolo was about to almost be swallowed whole by the superior Japanese companies and it did not make any effort to present itself as cutting edge, it was a celebration of the history and success of campagnolo. I have liked to see something a little different for the anniversary group, something revolutionary.. like a super record group made out of magnesium or something.

I had an '88 chorus group that was in such good shape it was the next best thing. One day I will regret selling it, but one can only have so many vintage bikes, especially when I would never ride it because it was too nice. At the time it was not recognized as much, but the '88 chorus group was the best performing group Campagnolo made in the 1980s, without question. It introduced a slant parallelogram to the line (finally) and included the monoplanar brakes (beautiful, elegant, work very well). It is a group to be celebrated and was the first signal that campagnolo was coming to their senses. While it may have also signaled that they were submitting to the superiority of Japanese innovation in the reluctance to use a slant, and giving up on the Delta brakes, it still showed that they would continue to be innovative with the monoplanar design and the adjustable slant angle.

I am a huge fan of Campy, especially the the pre 90's groups, but the truth is Shimano did hand it to Campagnolo. The Dura Ace 25th group is one of the most beutiful around. New Campy may function well enough but it is not at all nice looking.

I agree completely, but so is the stock super record, this group doesn't really do enough to differentiate itself from the stock group. It's more or less a different label. The 50th anniversary group was engraved differently and has many other embellishments such as the gold coloured inlays on the the pedal dustcaps, their own crank dustcaps etc... An inlay in the carbon of a red anodized QR/wing logo would have made all the difference.

Campy today is ugly compared to the glory years. They ought to re-issue the old stuff...It'd probably sell like hotcakes if it was priced at 900$ for the entire group.

The amount of money Shimano spends on graphic design and typography in particular must be in the seven-figure range. The subtle font changes in many of their groups is sort of mind-blowing. They even are constantly tweaking their own logo as well as their offshoots, like I noticed Pearl Izumi's font changing significantly lately.

Shimano became king of the hill through engineering excellence, innovation, and first to market (and very deep pockets to finance R&D and marketing). Handed it to Suntour and Campy quite easily. Their aggressive OEM program suffocated Suntour, and when ST was unable to innovate and engineer a reliable index system, Shimano filled the gap as they pushed them out of the OEM business. Campy has relied upon their Euro customer's loyalty for OEM, which gave them time to re-engineer indexing and make a reliable long lasting system. They have a premium price for sure and are not for the value minded.

After working on thousands of Shimano equipped bikes, I still prefer Campy over anything else and will continue to use my NR groupset from 86 well into the 100k mile range. Getting Veloce for my son in a year to ensure he is using proper equipment!
