Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

30 bushels is a lot. Were any cosmic crisp? I had a cosmic crisp after dinner.

It's a prolific tree. Nothing cosmic about it.

Every ride I finish lately I feel more and more like quitting the sport completely. People are getting crazier and crazier and every day I feel like I have one or two encounters where I could be seriously injured.

Friday, someone nearly pushed me into trash cans on the shoulder of the road in one instance and in a second, a mid-20s dude pulled up beside me, slowed and inched toward me while yelling “get out of the road you ******g ******!”

It’s sapping my desire to ride and I’m not interested in spending my life on the trainer.

Interestingly enough, I too have not been feeling it lately. Not so much because I think I am going to die, more of I just feel like I am in a rut and I have no motivation. Riding at 4 am everyday solo with a strict end time is getting old. I miss group rides, and the trainer does nothing for me. Not to mention, I am sick yet again. I feel like I have been sick steadily since august with maybe a day or 2 in between of reprieve. Prolly should take a week off and let my body heal.

I haven’t ridden anything but solo since July, in the same situation- have to go early with a strict end time. Maybe I’ll get out of the rut.

I know also that if I put the same amount of time/effort I do cycling into running I’d be far more competitive in that sport.

I did cross country in high school. I hated every second of it. Bams don’t run.

It’s hard for me to push myself when I am solo all the time, it’s pitch black where I ride so intervals and sprints are out of the question, some areas are straight creepy. Keep expecting to hear that I have a pretty mouth followed by banjos. Lack of cars is nice, but if I have a mechanical I would be Fd. I am usually still asleep the first 10 miles or so. I would say the past month it’s gone from, I want to ride to I have to ride which takes the pleasure from it. I’m scared if I stop I won’t start back up. I am a man of routine and structure and discipline (except for ice cream).

I did 2500 miles in 2021, 1500 in 2022, 500 in 2023. Chronic fatigue, balance issues, arthritis, keep me in the house . I still lift weights, but that's on the decline as well. I've always been fit and active. Turned 79 recently. Hard to accept the realities of old age.

Must be location specific. Around here, the biggest worry is being able to see if a driver has waved you through the 4-way stop intersection. 8 of out 10 times, they wave you through.

Maybe? Your location may be in the minority though.

Around here it’s fine to sit in line at Starbucks for 20 minutes for a 1000 calorie “latte” but god forbid you wait 10 seconds for safe passing space around a cyclist.

I've had those feelings and what helps me is to ride off road. There is also a nice network of bike paths not far from home. I like to choose road routes that don't have too many cars but doing club rides means sticking to the route.

It seems to me that over the last 30+ years drivers are more tolerant of cyclists in SoCal. Not too many screaming idiots yelling at us and they haven't been throwing things at us lately. Still, I sometimes go for a while riding off road only. If I knew more people who would do it regularly I would ride gravel or mountain bikes most of the time.

Fortunately have not experienced anything like that, but I try to stick to areas with either lots of riders or low traffic flows. We also have some decent MUPs. I know the arguments about MUPs, but I’d rather collide with a jogger than a Suburban.

A lot of yesterday was spent on quiet backroads but we still had to ride in traffic to get into and out of the area.
