Choosing a crankset to replace a a dead crankset

I have a Centurion Sport DLX with a Sugino VP crankset which has a nasty habit of unscrewing the left crank arm due to major deformity on the inside of the arm where it goes on the bottom bracket. I want to replace the crankset but I want opinions of if a used crankset it worth buying or if I should buy a new crankset I preferably want to spend as little as possible (no more than $80 total) but I want to get my money's worth with it lasting a nice amount of time.

I found a crankset (Sugino used but looks nice) that is a good price for my amount I have to spend (about $30 after shipping). My local bike shop said that if they did it the cost would most likely be about $70 for parts.

So the question I am asking is with a limited amount of money is it better to get a used crankset by a company that I have heard of or a if new crankset from a "no name company" is better.

Thanks in advance.

The only problem with used is you don't know if it is in any better condition than yours. If you can inspect it to be sure the square tapers are in good condition and the chainrings not excessively worn, then it can be a good deal. If not, not. At least a new crank is a known quantity.

You have an older used bike. Find a good used crankset, ebay or donor bike, and you will be good to go. Financially, it does not make any sense to me to put a new crank on that bike. And depending on the new crank, you will also need a new bb. You might be able to just find a left arm cheap, just be sure it doesn't have the same problems. Or post a wanted to buy/trade for a left crankarm on the C & V marketplace.

Just about all of my cranks come off of donor bikes.

Thanks for the all of the input .

The pessimistic side of me was saying what I was thinking of a used crankset of it dieing soon after I got it like some of you said.

Do any brand that uses the square taper fit any square tapered bottom bracket?
