Coast ride

Encinitas to San Diego on the ACA Pacific Coast route, 33 miles including that LOOONNNGGG hill at Torrey Pines. Second greatest ride ever (Santa Barbara to Oceanside was the best).

51.3 mile ride

I rode 51.3 miles today. I was alone and the wind was blowing from the north. I averaged 16.2 mph. I also had a flat at mile 25 so I changed to and headed home. I was going to ride 60 miles but changed my mind after the flat. I did make it home without another flat, thank goodness cause I didn't have any patches.

Beautiful Memorial Day, 29 miles (46.7k). Bike Buddy Bill showed me a new (to me) route up a long incline. You know you're in a high dollar area when there's a Rolls Royce (1980) for sale sitting on the street. Had a blast, 25mph coasting back down.

2017: 2,046m (3,293k)Total: 17,035m (27,415k)

It only takes 6 minutes for brain cells to react to alcohol.

Earlier today (5/29) before lunch, I rode from my house down to the James River here in Richmond, VA. While down there and stopping to snap a quick photo, I get a surprise text from my sister & bro-in-law, who were also on their way down with their bikes. So, I waited a bit for them and we all rode together for a while along Riverside Drive. The river was raging from all the rain we've had for days and days...

Then, as you can imagine, while we were looking at the river and taking photos, my phone goes off again, and it's my wife - a little agitated, wondering, "Where are you? We're supposed to meet (our daughter & son-in-law) for lunch!!" Oops... It seems that when riding a bike, you lose track of time. So, thankfully, my sister & bro-in-law opted to give me a lift back home in their truck with the bikes on their big trailer hitch mount bicycle rack. I was a nervous wreck with my beloved '85 Fuji Del Rey in a bicycle rack, but it was fine. I totaled 13.12 miles but in 1 hr, 9 min, due to us casually taking our time riding along the wet road and stopping along the river for photos.

Here's the obligatory photos:

My '85 Fuji out front of my house, as I ran back inside to get my phone (almost forgot it).

Stopping at the Z-dam along the roaring James River and shadows from the treelined Riverside Dr.

And lastly, here I am with my prized '85 Fuji Del Rey during another stop along the river.

42 miles this morning. Saw my daughter and her husband riding with some friends of theirs so I joined them for a few miles. Weather was great with slightly higher humidity than yesterday. ❤️

55 very rural, mostly flat miles on a club ride today. In order to encourage not-so-fast riders (like me) to feel a part of our rides, on most scheduled rides this year there has been a leader for folks who want to go the distance as a group and not drop anyone. About a dozen in the group today. We stuck together, as in all stopping for the single flat, and pitching in as needed to get a new tube in and inflated for the rider who had not dealt with a flat for a few years. I supplied the pump.

Was a bit rushed after returning from the Blue Crab Festival in Palatka, so only managed 30 miles in 95 degree weather with humidity moving in. Just a few folks braved the heat, but it was nice to see a few others outside.

My tradition on Memorial Day and Veterans Day is to ride the tandem - single, with a flag.

25 mile solo ride to reflect on the sacrifices made by fellow service members, and a pub stop midway to visit with friends and appreciate that life is for the living. And to remember that one of the most important lessons I've learned was written on the back of the helmet of a fellow who marched in formation ahead of me: "Be here now."

25 miles on the one day this week without rain.
It took me 3 hrs. Well I'm not out for speed, there were 2 parks along the way and I did some birding.

A really good 40 mile, solo ride this morning with moderate wind and even some rain. Hoped to have done more but I had to take the wife to the doctors, at 1:00 PM. His office is in South Tampa, about a 45 minute drive.

23 mile noon ride to get re-adapted to the approaching summer heat. Mostly pleasant ride with the exception of my first encounter with an obnoxious and aggressively rude wannabe traffic monitor/driver since resuming cycling a couple of years ago.

He tailgated me, roared up on my tail at a stop sign, honked, then stopped and rolled down the passenger window to spew out all the usual nonsense about hogging the lane and impeding the flow of traffic. This was a on a deserted road and he was the only vehicle. I suggested he call the police and get educated. When he persisted ranting I offered to call on his behalf. He skedaddled.

Not bad, really, considering that was more the rule than the exception years ago here. The vast majority of drivers are at least tolerant, and most are courteous and considerate. And it's not unusual for drivers to express genuine curiosity and appreciation for our casual group rides as an asset to the community.

Just returned from a professional bike fit on the Domane at UF Shands. Their Biomechanics Dept. has a sports fitness program which offers this service for a reasonable fee. Minor tweaks were made, which is good news as the 58cm Roubaix will fit me as it is close in geometry. Never having had a fit previously, I'm surprised it was as close as it was.

It is pouring here with thunderstorms right now, so no chance to test the new fit.

Edit: a break in the rain allowed me to get in 35 quick miles. It's so dry here that brief showers don't wet the pavement for long. During the fit the seat position was moved forward a pinch, small shims were added to the shoe bottoms (rotating my foot position slightly, and the handlebar position moved slightly. Nothing radical, but glad I made the investment.

End of month catch up ride in some very hot and humid conditions. Needed 27 miles to break 1,000 for the month so I did 55. It also put me over 5,000 miles for the year. Sometimes I wonder why I'm doing all of this?

Wow, I could never manage that kind of mileage with my work schedule and other commitments. I will be over 2,500 after tonight's 40 mile ride, and I'm fine with that. 5K miles a year is enough for me, even if I were retired.

Yes.... on an old, regularly neglected rider. Served me well in Las Vegas where the streets were unsafe in most areas

Weather permitting, I'm thinking of doing the Tour de Melon in Chiefland on Saturday - most likely the metric. I wish I'd known about it earlier as I wouldn't have pushed myself so hard this week. Oh well, I've never seen the Suwanee River, and I like watermelon....and the jerseys look really cool! Maybe a small recovery ride after work today......
