pump mount on carbon top tube
My old topeak frame pump got too beat up. It was mounted on the top tube of my bike with a velcro strap attached to the bracket. I bought a new topeak minimorph frame pump and thought the mount would be similar. It was not. I mounted it on my carbon top tube of my Serotta carbon/ti hybrid road bike with the 2 thick zip ties included in the mounting kit. After it was attached I started wondering if this is the best way to mount it on the carbon tube. It seems to come with a mount for the mounting in place of a bottle cage but I don't want to lose that bottle mount. Will the top tube mount zip ties damage the carbon tube? Thanks.

Unless you're Superman, and these straps are made of some new super strong material, that's a military secret, NO.
The only vaguely possible way this could be an issue is if you were trapping a hard point contact item, ie. a steel ball, and using the strap to force it against the tube creating a highly concentrated force to pressing in at a point. But you'd still have to been trying to go out of your way to damage the tube.

I’m not sure of exactly how this mounting scenario goes, but I’d bet it will almost certainly cause scratching and dulling of the finish.
The way those water bottle boss mounts works is that they’re designed to fit under a bottle cage, so that you don’t lose water capacity. Mounting it thusly is probably better in every way than a jimmy-rigged solution on the top tube.

But the Topeak Minimorph is too chunky to fit there without hitting the crank, so their mount doesn't allow space for a bottle cage:
Dumb. That's one of the reasons I stay away from the "morph" pumps -- too bulky.

Ah, I see. Thanks for putting me straight on that, terrymorse . I’m not familiar with the Topeak Morph, but it is clearly quite a uniquely beastly pump, and not the typical mini-pump I had assumed it was.
