Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Never entered my mind as there are no leaves in this part of the desert, mostly rocks and cholla.

I did try it with leaves and grass once in Oregon. It was not very nice.

When I was preparing to ride I didn't realize I had put a tube in the back tire of the Ellsworth months ago, so I pumped it up to 24 psi, typically perfect for me on 2.3" tubeless. Anyways I was having a blast out there on Trail 100 and pinch flatted, started trying to pump it up but I could hear the hiss of air escaping before I could get more than 10 PSI in there. A trail angel appeared and hooked me up with a 29er tube and I stuffed that in there, put in 30 PSI, surely that's enough for tubes? Nope, I felt my rim hitting rocks a couple times and sure enough pinch flatted again. Thought I'd ride it flat down off the trail and Uber or something but I didn't wanna wreck my rims so only did that for a 1/4 mile, then hiked the bike over to a wash and stashed it and started hiking to REI. I was dreading it at first but the weather was so nice and I still had a litre of water left I was actually having a good time. Then I passed a free grapefruit house, grabbed a couple and ate as I walked. They were primo, best grapefruit ever, at that point I totally put Ubering out of my mind.

Wasted my 20% off coupon on a tube, bought another full price too, JIC. Good thing too, as after I got back to the bike and peeled the tire off I notice my tubeless tape got absolutely destroyed by riding rocks on a flat tire. But I put 35 psi in this time and the tube held for the 7 miles trail ride back to the van, even made it back before dark.
Holy cow then. Avoiding any call of shame is a triple thumbs up.

I’ve also read about tying a knot in the tube and putting it back in. And then pumping it up. Not ideal, but might be better than an eight mile walk.

I am BEAT this afternoon. Spent the morning snow blowing and shoveling when originally I had planned for a rest day today following two days of weight training. I’m going to need a nap 😴.

The sun has come out, and I can see blue sky. Is this another sucker deal like yesterday, when it cleared up briefly then dumped rain and blasted wind?

I'm tempted to risk it, as two rest days in a row would be painful.

Top of Hamilton: zero visibility, 20 mph wind, gusting to 36, wind chill 22.3şF.

Okay, so maybe not Hamilton today. There goes my "two Hams per week" goal.

I expect the snow will be mostly melted by the time we return to the Actual North.

The dirt is from the gravel section. The BBQ was delicious.

I decided this morning, when I looked out and everything was all wet, that I would not ride outside today. Turns out, though, that the rain stopped before 9 AM.

OTOH....

Yes 5 or 6. The worst is that the icing and wet snow brought down a hefty tree limb and poked a hole in my garage roof. Now I need a guy to remove the tree, and another guy to fix the hole. Getting to be an expensive storm.

Mixed feelings about the mixed club/shop ride today. Was great to see some people I seldom get to ride with, about 20 riders in all. The guy who likes to blow up rides with our club was there and up to the same shenanigans. It's supposed to be a no drop ride and this guy wants to string it out and start dropping people.
The shop guy who runs the ride, also a friend of mine, had a few choice words for him. By the time we got to the turn around/bathroom break we had lost 4 riders.

I miss the old Sunday rides when we would have a coffee stop and tell stories, laugh, and relive the Saturday rides. This ride had just a quick bathroom stop then back to the start. Still, I had a good time and understand they are still figuring it out. It sucked that we lost those people on the way out and it would have been nice to have a coffee mid-way and chat a bit. The leader said he would be fine with a coffee stop if people want it and he will probably ask that one guy to stay away or just cool it with dropping people. I'll probably go back.

Weren't you one of the dumb dumbs complaining about how you didn't get enough snow this winter?

You need the Zwift Group Ride Fence, which is a big yellow wall that's always a fixed distance in front of the ride leader. Spend too long in front of the fence and you're no longer part of the ride. It's only visible as you approach it - if you're riding close enough to the ride leader, you don't see it. At least, that's how I remember it. I generally don't do group rides ITG either.

Recalling that you had mentioned the absence of snow this winter, it reminds me of one year here. we had a pretty dry January/February and all the Water Departments were spooked, but we had one of the if not THE wettest Marches on record and ended up with an average snow pack.
