Hi all,
I'm new to the downtube shifters on braze-ons world. I bought a bike with those fragile Shimano indexing levers and I'm switching them out with Suntour Sprint ratcheting levers. The plastic chrome piece that fits closest to the frame I want to keep with the Shimano shifters (they engage with it). So now I need two of the plastichrome, concave pieces (#7 in the shifter above). I don't know what I would call these and if they're universal or not.
Would any shop have these? What would I call them?

What happened to the ones that came with those fragile Shimano indexing levers?
If not, they're called "collars" or "backing plates" and come in both a concave-back and flat-back style.
Someone likely has some. I used to have a pair, but answered a query like this on the ISO/Trade thread, and mailed them out.

Yeah, when I say "bike shop" I almost exclusively mean a bike co-op. The only reason I have to set foot in a bike shop is for the occasional emergency tube.
The ones that came with the frame have little notches that interact with indexed shifters. I want to keep them with the Shimano indexed levers, and I wasn't sure how that surface would interact with my Suntour friction shifters.

The proper Shimano terminology is "lever boss cover". There was some compatibility between groups but I'm not sure if they were universal.

I tried not using anything--the lever can't get tight enough on the boss and just spins freely... I need something else on the boss to at least give a little resistance.
I also tried to use the original "lever boss cover." The indexing bumps/notches make the lever crooked on the boss, and it doesn't work properly at all.
The bosses are on a Trek 400T from 1987, if those bosses are special in some way.

I have one of these you're welcome to if it is what you need. Not sure where it came from or why I only have one. The inside face which interfaces against the frame has a curve and square inset which look just like the exploded drawing you posted. The outside has an inner raised boss diameter and tab. It is actually prettier than the pictures suggest. And I think it is plated die cast metal. Posting will be cheap enough, if you want it send me a PM with your address and I'll send it no charge.

That raised boss and tab are what's causing my shifter to not attach straight. That's the same as the ones that came with my frame.

The manual scan for these shifters shows two flat boss covers and one or two washers. I found two semi-concave boss covers and used a couple washers and it works great!

I do know for sure that the six speed indexed and the 7 speed indexed downtube shifters use the same lever boss covers. I switched up my Miyata with a set of 7 speed shifters (from 6) that was missing one, and the old one was a match.
