Using this Mavic headset with cantilever brakes, do I have any other options than a stem with a hole? I’ve searched for clamp on stops but can’t find any small enough to clamp onto the 22.2 stem. Thanks

The silver Tektro 1277A shown above with the cable stop is my favorite as the cable runs directly to it, like a caliper brake. So no more fiddling with the cable if you change your bar height.
Most will show the silver ones out of stock, but BikeToolsEtc has them, search for TK-1277A.

Trek made my favorite of the Power Hanger-esque bits. It uses dual ended, Shimano-style, half straddle cables. I have one on my off-topic Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross, with the bolt replaced by a front rack.

The OP has a Mavic 305/315 headset, which uses a single piece race/locknut design. They’re easier to adjust than a traditional 2 piece design, and stay in adjustment better, but do not accept spacers or steerer mounted hangers as you’ve suggested. Here’s a diagram that might help.

According to Trek's 1994 Retail Technical Manual (see the section starting on PDF page 21/printed page 38), they called that a BAU, for "brake actuator unit." They also had a different version for their short-lived line of step-through/women's bikes. And they also seem to have used an IRC (Interloc Racing Design) Widget for some bike models, though I don't remember every seeing one on any of the Treks stocked in the shop where I worked.

For whatever it's worth- I used to think these were pretty nifty... but all it takes is a bump or a nudge to flip that switch and you've got no brakes.

I have used the vertical fork-mounted Tektro hangers before, and have a pair. Great products.

I just grabbed this as a quick example, never gave the QR much thought.

I've had a few bikes with the QR on the hanger like the one pictured but Suntour or Dia Compe IIRC, the ones I had were usually a pain to get open so I don't think there was any danger of them coming open accidentally. But yeah, if you got one that didn't lock as well as the ones I had it could be a real bad day.
I think I still have a couple bikes with them I haven't built yet. I'll check them to make sure they lock properly, thanks for the heads up.

Many brake qr mechanisms rely on an over-centre action, either a toggle, or a detent, or a rotating barrel.
They all take some size of "nudge" to release.
At a minimum the nudge must overcome the brake spring(s).
I've never worried about that size nudge happening accidentally.

Neither do I worry about the wheels - held on with a similar over-centre action - falling off.

Imagine reaching to get something out of one of the back pockets and bumping the lever- or the main flap string gets caught on the lever and you pull the flap up...
