Two pickups. The first is an early 1990s Schwinn Passage. Although the paint looks great, the frame has several dents, top tube and all four stays. So its a donor, and my offer was adjusted accordingly. The second is a 1982 ish Peugeot PSV10, a rare find around here. 99% of the Peugeots here are low end, entry level or close. This has the DB Vitus 980 frameset, etc. Needs a complete rehab for sure, really dirty. But it is all there.

Got to love the brake cable routing....

I rarely admire mountain bikes much, because I don't ride them, but this one got me excited. Really nice. Looks like a load of fun.

Picked up a 1994? Specilized Allez at a thrift equiped with Campy Stratos 8-sp and Campy wheels/hubs. It had just been dropped off and wasn't priced. I asked the price and was told it was "A $1000 bike that they couldn't let go for cheap".

On the bright side, their definition of cheap = my defintion of cheap

Everything is in very nice shape (little dust/dirt) except the right Stratos lever is broken. Replacements aren't available

I didn't notice the headset until I got home...

Too bad about all those dents, the Passage looks like a nice bike from those pics.
Great score on the Pug!

Oh, and that sweet Allez, nice find.

A 1986 (I believe) Centurion Ironman. I believe the silver/grey paint scheme was only offered in 86. Unfortunately the previous owner lives in a college town and had it stolen and rattlecanned twice, first red, then blue. The previous owner tried getting the paint off by sanding and unfortunately scuffed up or completely removed the original paint everywhere he sanded. I will most likely repaint it myself. The don't think the front wheel and brake levers are original, but everything else seems to be. Also some 3ttt aero bars were thrown in.

+100 Great score on the Allez!

Yes, I was really disappointed on that Passage. From a distance, it looks really good. But up close, the stays are mangled, a couple of dents in the TT, etc. So I adjusted my offer down to donor bike status.

A curbed Specialized Crossroads I found recently. Back tire holds air, deraileurs shift, brakes seem to work, but need adjusted, and front tire/inner tube needs replaced. I toyed with the idea of having a step-through, but the fact that I deliver newspapers and want to use a bike for it, I didn't like the diamond frame on my road bike, especially with litter bucket panniers attached. Besides, it's a nice manly, Green Bay Packers green, lol.

Saw that one on CL last week and was tempted to contact the seller but it was an hours drive for me. The seller said it was a 59 so I decided not to. Glad it went to a good home it looks really nice. I am happy to see someone will ride it as opposed to relist it for $500.
Congrats well done.

Picked these two up on Monday from a thrift store, paid $64 for both. First time I've seen either one of these in person.

First up is the 3rensho. SN A3 105-8 it's got all Shimano 600 except for the freewheel (Dura Ace) and the rear derailleur that has a sticker that is half scratched off, can make out "INESS" with "CLES" and a little bike pictogram next to it. The 700c wheels are Mavic MA40, with Panaracer Category Kevlar tires. It looks like it's been partially repainted and has a few nicks here and there

Next is this Nashbar Aero Sprint. It's got Suntour a-5000, Araya 7000 700c/24" wheels, Sugino GP130 cranks. This one has really nice paint on it.

Both are set up for a Cateye Solar CC-2000, I guess they used the same computer for both bikes.

Both bikes look like they sat for many years, they were covered in grime and dust. I cleaned them up, put air in the tires, and they are perfectly rideable, with a bit of adjusting needed.

Unfortunately, they are too big for me.

as found

Wow, a $32 3Rensho! It is my size but I have too many bikes right now, you can get a minimum of $800 for that bike as it sits, probably more if you go the ebay route.

That 3Renso is SWEET! Yoshi Konno was one of my favorite builders during the later '70s and he was an key influence in my taking up frame building early on. It broke my heart to watch his alcoholism lead to his ultimate paralysis due to a drunken car crash. In the early '80s he lost some of his key employees and eventually the company shifted from being a true custom frame shop to being a production bicycle manufacturer. I can't be certain of the age of yours, but it looks to be a late 80s to me, and I congratulate you on your awesome find.

I have wanted a 1973 3Rensho Super Record with 1973 Campy Super Record components (the first year for each) since I first saw one when I was in High School, and even today it is my own personal Holy Grail of C&V.

I think it depends on where you live from what I can ascertain from watching this post, all I ever find here in Fort Wayne IN is junky Walmart type of bikes, I once found a decent brand once but it was so rusted it wasn't funny and the aluminum components and rims had huge amounts of corrosion, and the thrift store wanted $150! Nothing was worth saving on that poor bike. And add on top of that overcharging for a bike, I saw a low end Ross, in below average condition and the thrift store wanted $250. I have crappy thrift stores here. After 10 years of searching since I've moved to FTW I've only found 2 bikes reasonably priced and those were on Craigslist.

In talking to my friend here I take it that thrift stores in Portland rarely cough up much and that the good bicycles that do show up vanish very quickly.

My Giant was a pretty spectacular find because of it's NOS condition and relatively low price in this market but finding a 3Rensho at a Goodwill and paying so little is an amazing find to make.

Anything but unfortunately. Four or five years ago, I was finding 3/4 of my bikes at thrift stores, found five in one day. Those days are over.

Now, there are pickers camped out at the door to the backroom, and whenever anything decent rolls out (bike, tools, furniture, whatever), they pounce. And there is a line in front of the store, starts about an HOUR before they open. Oh, and their prices have gone up 10X..... Now, even the XMart stuff goes fast. I have donated a couple of Xmart bikes, the last time, I dropped it off, drove around the store to park. Got out of my car to go in, and a customer was already leaving with the bike......

The last good bike I saw at a nearby thrift store, they were asking $500 for it (a bike I might be able to flip for $250 max, after dumping $75 into it, and a days work). Someone bought it. There are people out there with thrift store fever, that assume anything there is a deal. I like to say they could sell $10 bills for $20, and people would line up to buy them. Crazy.

Not only that but employees have gotten into the game, they buy stuff they know they can sell, or some will set it aside and call a buyer they know who probably pays them a finders fee. This had actually been going on for years on the jewelry side, but since the E-Bay and Craigslist craze anything is opened to be snagged first and fast then resold.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I was pretty amazed to see these bikes sitting out in front of the store. We did a quick u-turn and I couldn't get the money out fast enough. it was about 3pm Saturday, and I guess i just got lucky. had to wait till monday to pick them up though, as they were closing and not open Sunday. I really enjoy taking something that is dirty, neglected, and forgotten, and returning it to nice useable condition. the before and after on these two is pretty remarkable. not only that, but the 3rensho rides, shifts, and brakes so nicely. Is there a way to tell what year and model it is from the serial number?

I know the 3rensho steals the show but, why no love for the Nashbar? I think it is fun and quirky and so different that I may keep it for a while.

i live in south Florida and i rarely find good deals at the thrifts stores, but i keep going back because of finds like these. i get an occasional score, but nothing like this. the bit about the pickers is right, there is one store that i go that has the same 4-5 guys hovering around the back door every time I’m in there, their prices have gone way up in the last few years and I regularly see items priced higher there than what they cost new.

I've seen what the 3rensho's go for on ebay, I might try that after trying Craigslist. Afterall, the only reason i am able to participate in this hobby is by selling some so I can get the bikes that i really want.

more before pics

i'll take some more after pics soon.

There are a huge cult following for pursuit frames, so I think the Nashbar will be very interesting for them. It just seems that C&V is mostly about race and track bikes.

You probably seen these: 3Rensho

I wish the Swedish thrift stores was a bit like the US ones. The market here is different, the thrift stores usually have a lot of clothes and some furnitures. Other objects are privately sold on sites similar to craigslist.
