Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Trek "Madonda"?

I came across this photo on the interwebs and assumed it might be a new Emonda prototype.

The Emonda is definitely due for a refresh, and it's not a huge surprise that Trek might be using the same seatpost design as the new Madone. The main difference between the two bikes appears to be the size of the tubing. The Madone, being an aero bike, has big fat tubes, whereas this prototype has thinner tubes.

It is now being suggested that this new "Madone-looking" bicycle with thinner tubes might be Trek's new "all around race bike" that will replace both the Madone and the Emonda... the "Madonda" . If true, it would mean that Trek is following in the footsteps of Specialized, doing the "one bike to rule them all" thing. It makes sense from a business perspective, as it would dramatically streamline things from a manufacturing perspective as well as for inventory and supply management of replacement parts. The bottom line is that it's good for the bottom line. For me personally, one bike to rule them all is the opposite of exciting, and I'd be disappointed if Trek discontinues the Madone.

''Aerorace'' seems to be the trend since a few years. One bike to rule them all like Specialized would say. I don't believe that the Madone will disappear though.

I doubt trek is going to discontinue the madone, or the emonda.

Where have you been? World tour pros cross-chaining up hills has been all the rage for at least a couple of years .

As for the Madone, I agree... the name will not go away. If this is actually a new Madone, then it looks like the Emonda is going bye-bye. I won't be disappointed if that proves to be the case, but I will miss the current version of the Madone in a similar way that Venge fans miss the Venge.

Big ring means the hill is easy. Legs prefer that.

Damn pros! Always there, hanging around, doing stuff us - mere mortals - can't do or afford to do.

The only point in having separate aero and climbing race bikes is if the aero bike is significantly above the UCI 6.8 kg weight limit. So if they can now optimise aero without compromising on min weight then there is no case for a dedicated climbing race bike within the UCI regs. Only bikes like the Aethos make any sense as dedicated hill climbing weapons outside of UCI regulations.

So I think it’s just a matter of time before they all follow Specialized in producing a single road race frame.

We can only hope this trend continues. Because of course it means that the manufacturers can cut their R&D budgets in half, while also concentrating and tooling for 1 model in their production lines. All of this will then be bound to lead to significant price decreases for the consumer, right?

If it's accompanied by an increase in the company's profits, yes.

Naw, you will pay a premium.

They've managed to optimize your climbing and flatland needs into on package, your climbing and speed will be .002% better, and that level of engineering/R&D is expensive. Then they will sell you on wheelsets optimized for the frame, one set for climbing, one set for flatland speed - and since they are specifically designed to work with this frameset, you will pay a premium for both.

I saw a Trek the other day. The tubes were really big, so big they seemed almost swollen. I think it was the new Trek Edema.

Hey next we should ask what bike related stuff eveyone got for Christmas!
Maybe a thread about how 105 12sp analog exists would be good!

...just spitballing other thread topics that were recently discussed.

Is it okay to bring a bike into the grocery store? Asking for a friend.
