Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Since my legs, heart, and lungs are exactly identical to yours, you should use the same ratio that I do.

What ratio are you using? Because that's not it.

Suppose I'll be helpful. Not because I want to, but because I can't think of anything clever.

Thinking in gear inches would be more helpful than thinking about a gear ratio to start off with. For commuting on flat city streets I would suggest any gear ratio that will give you 60 - 75 gear inches depending on if you are riding fixed or single speed and your fitness level.

Use this website and some trial and error to find out what you prefer: BikeCalc.com - Fixed Gear Calculator

It would also help us to know anything about current bikes you ride.

Edit: Wanted to post this too.

That's the thing, I completely agree with this, but soooo many caveats.

I agree with @Carcosa. 60 to 75 gear inches is a good place to start and adjust from there depending on terrain, strength and masochistic tendencies.

What speed do you ride at the most? What is your most comfortable cadence. Pick a gear that fits both.

666 gear inches is the best. It will give you 666 skid patches and you will be able to ride 666 mph.

Flat city streets, depending on how many starts and stops and windiness of the city, all factors that impact the decision,... That said, I would recommend 46 OR 44 front and 16 rear.

The thing about 44 / 16 is you can get up and go quicker with slightly less effort. That to me is a key factor for city-flat riding. But if I wanted to go FAST and get a better work out I would opt for 46 / 16.

But if you WANT the BEST strength workout and SPEED in flat city riding THEN that changes things.

It depends on which grease you use. Tacky greases create more drag and require lower gearing to overcome that.

ahhh, I re-read it ------ commute to WORK.... so I am thinking 44/16. Don't want to get too sweaty.

The Pontiac Fiero probably had the best all round gear ratios for commuting.
