I see coyotes in my neighborhood on Monday and Thursday mornings.

Another one to add to the list: roadrunner, spotted on Mines Road, south of Livermore.

They are weird little guys. When they are running, they look like an arrow with legs.

If you happen to see one, leave it alone. You don't want to be messing with it, particularly if you eat beef jerky.

In my local/home state rides, I've seen a few black bear these past several years. Lots of deer and wild turkey. Once a bald eagle. Once a coyote. Bunch of raccoons and porcupines. There's usually a couple of swans in nearby lakes. And lots of Canadian geese.

He lives in the mountains surrounding the Yaak River Valley in Montana, which is way up in the NW corner of the state and surrounded by Forest Service land. He peacefully coexists with black and grizzly bears, elk, deer and mountain lions.

The locals have an annual Sasquatch Festival. The first time I rode up there, someone had takes a notice to a pole. It was written on counterfeit Forest Service paper and explained how he doesn’t mess with people, so you shouldn’t be afraid.

I almost bought a second home up there earlier this year.

I’ve seen swans, pelicans, mountain goats, elk, black bear, deer (white tail and mule), ducks, geese, bald eagles, hawks, pheasants, turkeys, moose (that was a rare sight around here), all kinds of snakes, turtles, frogs, coyotes, wolves, foxes, antelope; just about every species of wildlife known to the PNW. I even saw my first grizz while riding up in Montana.

my favorite though were these large crickets… the road was just paved with them.

Lucy the Elephant lives in Margate, NJ. She served as a speakeasy during prohibition. Have't seen her since her extensive facelift was completed this year.

The Missoula KOA was overrun with rabbits in 2019 that were not there in 2017. There are several manufactured homes surrounding the campground. A resident released two pet rabbits and they, well, bred like rabbits. Dozens of them hopping around with little fear of humans. I counted 9 alone during my short walk from my campsite to the hot tub.

More buffalo. Wind Cave N.P., 2015. A couple of them had cavles, including the one at the far left of the photo. The cavles stary out this cool rust color that tunrs darker as they age. Never get close to a cow where she is with her baby. She is extremely protective.

I live and ride primarily in NE Iowa but have lived in the Driftless region here (SE Wisconsin, SE Minnesota, Mississippi River valley) 98% of my life.

Whitetail Deer are far the most dangerous wildlife. I’ve collided with one Mountain biking and have had several close calls on the road going fast downhill.

I also hunt them in the bow season for some payback and to fill my freezer! Already tagged a nice buck Halloween week.

On a ride along the C&O canal earlier this year I almost ran this one over and they were not happy about being asked to move off of the trail.



There were also some turtles basking on a branch in the canal itself.



And this is one of the many hazards of cycling in India, a motorcyclist I met earlier that day had just missed being flattened by a rampaging elephant by a metre.

Heh. We have a historic canal here in Philly. There is a noted downed tree that plays hosts to turtles just like that. Some days there are dozens of them lined up nose to butt.

I was riding the loop around Tucson a while back, and there were a couple roadrunners just off the path. I guess I spooked it pretty good, because it started out running (as usual) down the path, and then, even though I wasn't really catching up, decided it was time to fly away.

Just remembered the cicadas from a few years back. Deafeningly loud, of course, but big enough to see them flying and on the trees as I was riding.

Five or six years ago I was cycling along a minor road when a car overtook me. I moved in towards the edge of the road.
Just as the car was going past me, a snake came out from the grass on the side of the road, to go across the road. As I couldn't move out to avoid it, and had no time to brake, I ended up running over it.
I kept going for a couple of kilometres, in case the snake was not dead, but annoyed, and decided to chase me. I've no idea what snake it was and I really don't like them anyway.

I actually counted about 10-12 water monitor lizards this morning, Wednesday, on this bicycle path that isn’t used often in eastern Bangkok. This one was eating a dead turtle.

One of our regular stops is on this pier near the Richmond channel, part of the Rosie the Riveter historical site. A crane leftover from the Kaiser shipyard is home to the local osprey.

I didn't see it on a ride, but the Palo Alto beaver has died.

She had made their way up from the baylands to the concrete-lined creek by our house. Not a great place for a beaver.

RIP Palo Alto Beaver, we hardly knew you.
