I think the term “cockpit” with regard to bikes came from the triathlon community. When they began to integrate the handlebars and aero bars into a single component, and they included accommodations on that component for mounting hydration so that the rider could drink without coming out of the aero position…and with all control of bike now mounted on that component (brakes and shifters)…and the bike computer…it was called the cockpit. — Dan

Maybe it sounds better than handlebars and stuff. Kind of like when cyclists refer to cycling as "this sport." Just trying to make it sound better/more important.

I thought it was a gay bar in downtown Kansas City but maybe I’m confusing it with the Man-hole in downtown Chicago?

in either case, walk inside with your spandex kit during happy hour and your likely to get a free drink or two.

I cringe when I read cockpit, drivetrain, "build", its all weird american bike-speak. Cycling lingo is and should remain euro based. Its in the rules.

First time I heard it was from the Brits… and I thought what kind of asshatery is this lingo…

They are handlebars.

This reminds me of the tiny flaps of material on cycling jackets that cover the zipper when zipped up as being called a “zipper garage.”

Yes, as a Brit I can say it’s a fairly well used term here. It sounds a bit pretentious and vague really.

"Cockpit" has been in the bicycle jargon for quite a while.

From Adventure Sports Mountain Biking, John Olson 1989:

IMNSHO, they are a lame attempt to portray the bars, etc as something macho and technical (like the cockpit of an aircraft) whereas the general public views them as handlebars used by weenie bike riders. Making it macho gives them more dignity, complexity and masculinity.

That’s the best you can do! Perhaps it’s time for a little break and reset for the new year because that troll attempt is just pathetic.

I only have just enough, never way too much electronic crap on my bars.

Agreed. Someone needs a ‘time out’ to think about his words. Don’t know how many times a person’s negativity has to be called out.

Where zippers go to get serviced? Sorta like that Cockpit bar where riders go for the same? So zippers have a life we don't know about? (I paid real money to have double zippers installed on my Showers Pass jackets. Have I brought some nefarious practices into my house?)

Sounds reasonable. I call my pre-ride checks on bicycle components my Pre-Flight Check List.

Funny, I was just messing with a flight plan into Charles M Schulz Airport in Santa Rosa, and noticed a waypoint east of the airport called "SNUPY".

I think this is more new-speak by the manufacturers in a subtle move to justify the insane prices of their top-line racing bikes by inferring some sort of relationship between F1 cars, fighter jets and - see - your $15,000 bike is sorta, kinda the same 'cause it has a cockpit too!

Google Image search for 'cockpit' results. When handlebars start showing up in the top 100 images, I'll jump on the bandwagon and start calling my handlebars the cockpit

As was pointed out, the term has been used since at least the 80s.

It's really harmless, I don't understand the kerfuffle. I don't care for the term "brifters" but if people want to use it, I'm not going to rail against them/it.
