As an aside, the last time I tried to ride a wheelsucker off my wheel, I ended up dragging him back up to the back of the fast club ride we'd both been dropped by, and immediately blew up and got left for dead.
At least he thanked me, though actually HELPING might have been nice.

When we ride together, she usually rides about 18 MPH.
Morale to the story, women and their husbands, don’t like them being drafted if you are a stranger.

When you are riding and some stranger passes you, is it ok to catch up and draft behind them? Is this considered bad manners? Or is there some proper way to do this that is polite? I do this from time to time without problem but the other day I did it and the guy in front slammed on his brakes so of course I slammed into him and both of us were very annoyed with the other. He did it on purpose because he thought I was a creep for drafting behind him. I had no idea this was not allowed. So what is the right way to draft behind a stranger when out and about?

I have.
On a long moderate-grade climb, I had a guy come up behind me and sit on my wheel for a while without a word. I just maintained my pace until he decided he wanted to go a little faster, and he started rolling past me. I lifted my pace and sat on his wheel until I needed to back off when the grade kicked up. I thanked him for the wheel, and he wished me a nice day. We both went on with our ride.
Another time, on a long false flat, I could see a rider about 100 yard ahead of me, moving at a similar fast tempo pace. I turned up the heat a bit and caught up to him. I offered a greeting as I went by, and he jumped on my wheel without invitation. I pulled for a little while, and then he rolled ahead and pulled for a little while. Not another word was shared while we were both working hard and enjoying going faster than we would have on our own. A bit further up the road, he turned off to continue his ride in a different direction.
Zero people were offended in either scenario.
Some of you folks seem pretty uptight.

A few weeks ago I was chasing a guy around Mercer Island, but he was pretty fast and had no chance in catching him. He passed a guy ahead of me, which I passed and he jumped my wheel and said, man that guy is strong. We started trading pulls and picked up our pace but still couldn’t catch the flyer. After 10 minutes he came to his turn and he wished me well and said we gave it a good effort. After another few minutes I caught up with the flyer stopped at a 1 lane construction project waiting for the flagger to let him go. I told him, how I had been chasing him half way across the I90 bridge and halfway down the island with another guy. He said he was doing an all out training ride and was going to just spin back home and recover. We chatted for a while and wished each other well. When we allowed to proceed, he disappeared behind me never to be seen. That night I got a friend request on Strava from the same guy who saw me on Fly-by. We have kept in contact since, even though there is no way I could ever ride his pace and he being 20 years younger but its cool that we were and are able to connect.

If that is a joke, it’s a poor one, or one from the 60s. When my wife is out riding and a guy starts to draft or pace her, it makes her extremely uncomfortable. Women, whether walking or on a bike do not being followed, This is not too hard a concept to grasp.

Though, obviously, women have additional concerns over and above simply not being run into by inattentive wheelsuckers, and one would have to be a creep not to acknowledge that.
