1976 Trek

This Trek was brazed in December of 1976 based on the serial number (referencing the vintage Trek we site). The color is absolutely stunning. It has to be my favorite color of the early Trek years.

It is a tx200 model with ishiwata 0265 tubing. It is in great shape and appears to be all original minus the tires which are newer. The very early time stamp would lend some collector value I would think.

What are thoughts on value for this one? I'm happy to hear either current state or full resto, though there is really not much to restore other than fresh bar tape and some bearing repacks.

That bike is beautiful. I'm a big fan of vintage Treks but there just isn't a lot of value in hi tensile steel bikes. That said, this one should be near the top of the valuation range for a hi tensile steel bike given its condition and that it's an early Trek. I'd value it at $150 and that's likely a little on the high side. I've bought a number of bikes from that era with better frame sets at that price or for less.

I would say that the scarcity of these bikes, and the condition of this particular bike, would push it a little higher. $250-ish.

It's all about supply and demand. I really like this bike but $250-$350 gets you a bike with a better quality frame and parts. You have to love old Treks to pay that much for this bike. There could be that level of demand for this bike given age and condition but I've paid less for each of my vintage Treks.

The OP lives in a better and larger market than I do but the upper Midwest (the OP is in Milwaukee) is Trek land. Trek had a terrific market presence in this area back in the day which means that there are a fair number of older, high quality Treks floating around.

I think as it sits $250, the real value is only the frame. The parts are little bit more than a gimme in the deal.

On the plus side: it's vintage Trek steel and it's clean.

On the minus side: The stratification of desirability for early Treks was: Columbus, Reynolds and Ishiwata tubing, in that order.

So this is the lowest desirability (Ishiwata, though really nothing wrong with it) with a hi-ten frame (0265) and the lowest model (TX200) with SunTour fingertip shifters. You've gotta be jonesing for something really specific with this bike if you're planning on riding it, in which case it'll probably need a full rebuild after 45+ years of sitting.

Could be wrong, but if it's a TX200 model as the OP states, I think it's a '77 because there was no TX200 in '76 according to the vintage-trek.com website.

It is an exact match for this tx201 model listed in the "Trek Midwest" catalog. I agree that it was likely sold as a 1977 model considering the frame was serialized in December 1976.

The components are fine but really nothing special, it even has oem chrome rims which shocked me! I just figured some Trek collector might have an eye for something like this considering it is very clean and in original state. Old Treks do abound up here in Wisconsin but this is the first one I have come across that was made in 76.

Wow, steel rims as original equipment on a '76 Trek with a hi tensile steel frame. That's the first Trek I've seen that came with steel rims.

I would think $250-300 in current state with the nice paint the frame has good value and some of the components are actually pretty valuable in this nice of condition. You could easily part it out for more than that on evil bay but that would be a shame. For example the crank set with BB dust caps, outer chain guard and pedals would likely go for $125-150 plus shipping early Maxi cranks and rat trap pedals have come way up in value sold a set. I sold a pair of slightly worn but good looking early maxi dust caps for $20 plus international shipping in the past year.

Trek used the same frame construction paint quality on all models yet tubing models in there early days ranged from lower end to top with component's all over the place so nice steel rims are stock and not really out of place. But interesting since they dropped the bottom end 200 models with steel rims a year or two later and moved to higher end stuff./

Are those steel rims? If so, I am lower than above. A collector is going to want one of the higher end models, one with Columbus tubing for instance. Not really a collector's bike IMHO, as a collector myself. Need to replace that awful seat tube bolt with the big nasty washer. Is the rear wheel nutted? In the end, crankset + V GT RD = ~ complete bike value.

I would agree as mentioned the crank assembly and Suntour VX shift group are worth more than the bike.
