rim brakes?

I guess another manufacturer has fallen to inexorable tide that is disc brakes. I guess I should have picked up that CF SL 8 when I had the chance.

https://www.canyon.com/en-us/road-bikes/rim-brake/

Does anyone make a decent rim brake bike any more?

Otherwise nothing to see here; just grumbling.

Yes, there are, for example Bianchi Aria, Basso Diamante, Specialized Allez, Wilier GTR Team, and Merida Scultura. I’m sure there are lots of others, too, particularly if you include custom-made frames like Crumpton or Sarto.

Didn’t Specialized switch the Allez to disc for the 2023 models?

I heard that was all of the variants, and has a sad from it.

There are still 3 rim brake Allez models on the website here at the end of Q3 2023, which strongly suggests your sadness has been for naught.

It is tough for the larger manufacturers to keep rim-brake models in their lineups unless they are selling well enough. Custom options for sure but if you like a rim-brake model, buy one soon. There is no telling how many will fall each year.

Both Winspace road models, the aero T1550 and lightweight SLC 2.0, are available in either rim or disc frameset variants

Just to add to this, many shops are not even stocking these few remaining entry-level rim brake builds.

In the case of Trek and Specialized, the disc versions are just $100 more on MSRP than the otherwise identical rim brake versions - and these bikes are all currently being sold at discounted prices, so there's a very good chance an LBS will sell the disc version for the same price as the rim brake version.

Do people here really still buy bikes already built up? Like, bikes from a factory?

Yes, but at a very minimum we will change seat, spokes, hubs, rims, tires, brake pads, bars, and tape before we ride it.

But not derailleurs and shifters?

I'd like to add that Ritchey still makes the Road Logic in a rim brake option.

I would guess that most customers buy their bikes "off the rack."

BikeForum posters are probably a very small subset of the folks that ride bikes. We spend much of our free time riding bikes, and when not doing that, we are reading about bikes, thinking about bikes and working on bikes. At least, I do.

Most people, I would think, go their local shop (or department store) with a budget in mind and just go from their. After sticker shock.

Yeah, I guess. Personally, I haven't bought a bike "off the rack" since 1984. If I wanted a particular feature that wasn't widely available, I would just build it myself.

People buying off the rack today probably don't care much what type of brake is on the bike--and if they did, they would probably prefer disc brakes.

If you want particular things, you buy a frame/fork and build your own bike. That way you get exactly what you want and don't have boxes of parts taken off a nearly new bicycle. The way we used to do it.

^ Tell me you are being purposely obtuse without telling me you are being purposely obtuse.

Even here, the overwhelming majority clearly buys bikes fully built. That is easy to see based on pictures.

No...I just figured most folks on a forum such as this would get stuff built the way they prefer. I suppose if you find an off-the-shelf bike with everything you want, you would go that route.

Like I said, I haven't bought a bike for myself off the shelf since 1984. But if buying a bike off the shelf works for you, then have at it.

It's generally cheaper to buy bikes than frames and components, and a lot of bikes these days come with proprietary seatposts and stem or stem/bar combos. And mostly, mixed groupsets are a thing of the past as well. Doesn't seem like there's a lot of sense in spending more to end up in the same place.

Just to muddy the waters even more. Anyone seen a rim brake frame for sale lately? Especially in carbon.

Do you care where it is manufactured?
Worldwide = many hundreds.
40 in Portland OR alone.
Bikes made in Portland, Oregon

I would hate to think how many in California. Italy. Japan. Taiwan. Mainland China. EU/UK, Down Under. You can buy bamboo bikes sourced from Africa with aluminum rim brakes, no carbon wheels offered...

Open one's eyes to the BIG cycling Universe.
