34-miler from solana beach to o-side and back (mostly) along the coast highway. hadn't ridden it this year with the sun out in all its' glory.
nice day. a little humid but much less so than inland. made the obligatory stop at the solana beach pizza port for...liquid carbs. shocker. may hit the coast again maņana. hit it with the '85 pinarello today. will be tempted to do it with the '95 look tomorrow. decent amount of cyclists out but more e-bikers out than us "old-timers." prob a surf city ratio of "2 to 1" e-bikes vs non-motorized bikes.

Back on the bike today knocking out 23 road miles around Pasadena and 90+ degree weather. Definitely toasty outside!

JonathanF2: you gotta get an earlier start to avoid the summer heat!
Heck, I went out around 8AM and it became plenty warm near 11, when I arrived home.
Mixed in a few hills around Upland and Laverne to reach about 2,500 climbing feet over 40+ miles.
Ventured up San Dimas Canyon to the very top, where only gravel or mountain bikes can continue.
Bumpy ass road, especially coming back down to Foothill Blvd, staying vigilant for potholes ready to ambush me.
It may rain in SoCal wednesday or thursday. Watch for that.

back out to the coast as promised on the 1995 look...solana beach east to rancho santa fe, then a drop down el camino real to the olivenhain area.
jumped back to the coast in the la costa area. rode decently hard first half of the ride, second half was a cruise fest. rained on three different times with big, summertime raindrops. humid and cloudy throughout. 30-miler of which 15 were decently spun. the last 15 were at a super cruise, 10-14 mph coasting pace. just really
wanted to enjoy the scenery and weather. love love riding in summertime, big raindrop weather. didn't see as many cyclists oot und aboot today.

For Wednesday I just did 15 miles of gravel climbing around LA. I climbed Debs Park on one of the uphill trails that has about a 17% grade climb. I then descended down the dirt trail and hit up Mt. Washington with some easy 10% climbs. I finished the ride off over at Eldred Street and climbed the 33% hill! This road is great if you want to test out the durability of your rear derailleur. At 33% elevation, you could feel every rotation of the crank inch you a bit closer to the top!

Road ride (31mi, 1500’) - Rolled steady tempo laps around the Rose Bowl loop for an hour until the Tues/Thurs group ride got started. I did 2 hot laps with the group before it was time for me to head for home. I felt comfortable and within my capacity at the faster pace, and wish I could have stayed longer. Nice ride, and the cooler temps were very appreciated.

Saturday morning, 36 mile road ride around the LA River bike trail, up Griffith Park and back home. I didn't feel motivated to ride this morning, but made myself suit up and go out! Also I've been bouncing back-n-forth between 25c and 28c tires, but I find 25c suits me better. 28c feels more like a narrow gravel tire size to me!

Left at dawn and rode an out-and-back over Turnbull Cyn to the SGRT north to mile marker 38.0 and flipped around.
Several pacelines out today but no e-motor cycles menacing the route. Did not encounter any homeless camps blocking the way.
LA Co Public Works could get a crew to trim back the greenery blocking the trail near Whittier Blvd especially the tunnel!
Works out to a Metric with 3.2K of climb.

Road ride yesterday up to Malibu. Climbed Las Flores & Rambla Pacifica up to Saddle Rock - just under 3,000' climb. Descended Tuna Canyon. Had to stop half way down to let my rims cool off. I stayed off the brakes as much as I could, but it's just impossible for certain stretches. The rims (alloy) were almost too hot to touch. I was afraid of a blowout. Anyway, the temperature was great, although it was about 75% humidity.

worry about descending tuna canyon on old school brakes. my rims hot as hades too. once past the oak trees and pitching down hard along the edge of the canyon, it ratchets up the "fun." descending deer creek much the same (and lower decker) but sightlines better.

Saturday...Road ride up Angeles Crest Hwy to Mt. Wilson with a few friends (47mi/5700'). We arrived just as the gates to the upper parking lot and Cosmic Cafe opened, and we relaxed for a few minutes to enjoy some really tasty hot dogs. Unfortunately, the haze currently settled in the LA basin made for mediocre viewing from the top of the mountain. It's been 20+ years since I've ridden a bike up to Mt. Wilson. Great ride!



Sunday...Gravel ride in my local hills (Chaney Tr - Cherry Canyon - Glendale Sports Complex, 22mi/2800'). Legs felt sluggish at the start, but opened up pretty well as I got going. I ended up feeling better than expected, and pushed a threshold effort a couple of times. However, something was going on with my rear brake, and it was rubbing intermittently, despite multiple stops to try to realign the caliper, I never got it right. The new pads that have been sitting on my bench for over a week got installed that afternoon. That seems to have rectified the issue.

yeah - I think I'll try my gravel bike with slick-ish tires next time. That bike has disc brakes (and lower gearing for the uphill)

I would for sure have the same breaking issues.
Watch Safa do Tuna in less than 6 mins at speeds over 60mph.

I've seen it. He's nuts -- especially on that road. There are plenty of sharp turns with no guardrails and basically a cliff on the other side. Still - I'd feel a lot better about descending with disc brakes and not having to worry about a thermal explosion of my tire.

Yeah. The one where he follows Romain Bardet and Kevin Vermaerke down Mulholland Highway, they were regularly crossing over the center line on blind turns.

There is also the ride where Safa drafts Tom Pidcock down tuna and Tom complements him as king of the downhill. I think the reason strava does not track KODs like KOMs is because there would be too many fatalities.

Not sure how the tools filter out downhill rides?

Quick google shows downhill segments were "decommissioned" which is a good thing. Ride safe!

I did 28 miles on Monday around the neighborhood. I need to ride earlier, because midday I was feeling fried outside!

Hmmm...On my ride to Mt. Wilson on Saturday, Strava most definitely tracked my descents, and a leaderboard shows up just the same as any other segment. On the Angeles Crest Hwy descent from Clear Creek to the 210, Safa Brian is tied for the lead.

I almost got plowed by a work truck while I was going uphill on a fire road turning into a blind corner. I wasn't even descending. I only did it because the outer road was filled with too much gravel and dirt. Even on a road where you don't expect traffic, all it takes is 1-2 seconds to get hit. Also I think that's what happened when a local cyclist was killed a year ago on a downhill descent who crossed the center line.

Pasadena hills up Glenoaks Blvd. I've been using the Pasadena hills near the Rose Bowl as my uphill training grounds lately for both road and gravel. During the weekday the traffic is minimal and the roads are nicely paved, with many of dead ends leading into dirt fire roads for gravel exploration. Also I don't consider myself a fast "crit bro" with the guys who go fast around the Rose Bowl. It's more peaceful climbing solo with no cars or people around.
