Did a few trips home after work this week and got to sport my new Bianchi jersey. SGRT is still lightly flooded near Whittier Blvd with puddles and dirt mounds. Rain coming this week will make it worse.

Thought about riding up to the Santa Fe Dam but why when I can have the Whittier Hills to mostly myself?
Started mostly cloudy and ended in partly sunny in the 60's. Building back up for a 60 mile and 6K climb ride to celebrate 60 years of existence.
Punked out on the steeper hills. Just don't have the legs yet.

Wednesday I did 32 miles at Griffith. I was planning to go in the morning, but work had to interfere with my cycling! Anyways, I left around mid-afternoon and I was treated to some beautiful golden hour sun. Also the fire roads at Griffith are totally battered from the rain. Some sections of the road I had to walk my road bike over due to mud, rocks and rutted pavement with potholes and cracks all over. I really should have taken the gravel bike.

On my way back home on the LA River bike path, I saw a female cyclist having trouble fixing her flat. She had a butyl tube and a liner on her wheel and it was really hard to remove. I helped her get her punctured tube off to install the spare and quickly inflated the tire using my electric pump. I then hauled ass to get home so I could bring my son to his martial arts class!

30-miler from solana beach north to carlsbad and back. brisk, 3/4 headwind up to carlsbad that was not a factor heading south. plenty of cyclists out with approx 40-50% being e-bikers. not surprising with all the state beach campgrounds filled with motor homes.

Nice! Where is the top photo? I only know the gravel trails in Irvine: I would love if I can figure out how they connect to Newport Beach. (I don't think I have the bike handling skills to ride Bommer Canyon yet.)

I did 38 miles this afternoon from North Irvine down to and around Newport back bay and back. Took it easy over the bumpy segment of the Bayview Trial and managed to avoid that flat tire experienced during my last attempt at this route. Still have not figured out a route that would give me 40 miles.

Saturday...Gravel ride with a few friends. Up Cherry Canyon - down Glendale Sports Complex - up Beaudry North - down Skyline - up Stough Canyon - down Whiting Woods. As many times as I've ridden in the Verdugo Hills, this covered a lot of sections that I've never ridden before. The descent down Skyline singletrack was a bit demanding and chunky at the top, but the bottom is fantastic. Most of our climbing seemed like it was just grinding at sub-5mph. It was damn hard ride. 4hrs, 34mi, 5600'.


Sunday...Solo road spin - peaceful and pleasant. Arroyo bike trail - LART - Glenoaks - Verdugo Blvd. Mostly easy and steady zone 2, with a few moderate efforts. Legs felt really good for the first hour, and then the fatigue from Saturday's ride hit like a brick. 2hrs, 34mi, 1300'

It's the area surrounding the Huntington Beach wetlands off of Warner and PCH. There is a trail that starts off of Warner to Brightwater and goes into the Wetlands. You can stitch together a a variety of gravel as you traverse around the wetlands towards Sea Cliff back to PCH.

Wednesday I did 26 miles on a beautiful day, but with a few hiccups. I went to ride over at Griffith Park and I should have known the day would be tough, because on my way there a pigeon took a s**t on my bike and leg. I met up with a buddy and we rode up to the Observatory. I was feeling pretty good, I even dropped an e-bike on the way to the top.


This is why I live in LA.


Anyways on the downhill descent I got a flat (the fire roads are crap from the rains), patched that up and then we grabbed a beer and fries at some bougie spot on the LA River. I was a bit disappointed with the fries because they looked like thin cut potato chips and they gave us some weird mayo/tartar sauce. I immediately asked for ketchup.


We drank our beers and both headed home in separate directions. A good 2-3 miles from my house I heard a big whiz sound and my rear tire flatted again. This time I noticed a nasty wood screw directly lodged through my tire. I called my wife for a pick-up and she told me I was banned from bikes for the 50th time. Though I was mostly bummed because the tire that got skewered was my GP5000 slick. To make matters worst, when I got home I noticed the screw had left a nasty scratch/paint gouge on my rear seat tube post. I inspected, cleaned, applied enamel and then put black protection tape on the spot so I'd forget there's some damage there!

I always look at the bright side, my wife gifted me a new phone so all my photos are new and improved. Though if I was riding a $10k + S-Works Aethos, I might be crying a bit more about my bike!

jonathanf2 Fries don't look so bad and I would take tartar sauce over ketchup any day, where is this bougie spot? But the wood screw through both sidewalls looks bad. Don't forget to check the seat stays and chain stays too; good luck.

The spot is Lingua Franca on the LA River Bike Path right next to Spokes Cafe. I prefer The Hermosillo in Highland Park for after ride beer and snacks. I find it actually more bike friendly with ample space for bike parking. The other spot despite being right next to the river bike path, isn't as accessible in terms of bike parking.

Just a short 14.3 mile loop through the gravel side segments of two local bike trails (Peters Canyon Trail and Hicks Canyon Trail) to test ride my XT pedals and SPD cleats. I would have gone longer but it took forever to position my cleats.

I just did a short ride on Sunday around the neighborhood. I was testing some new carbon wheels. I opted for a set of 30x30 hookless 29ers using a 15mm to 12mm TA adapter for the front wheel. I'm sold on hookless. They were super easy to bead and the rim sidewalls are noticeably stiffer. Plus with LA dirt terrain, I don't see the need for deep CF wheels since all I do is climb up fire roads and single track trails with my gravel bike.

Got some Enve Gravel bars for the diverge, nice n comfy but wide at the drops. I'll have to get used to this fit, i moved some stem spacer back under the stem as it felt longer reach.

On Wednesday I did another local LA ride. Despite living in the city, there are quite a few hidden off-road trails within neighborhoods. I tend to link them between the road rides to mix up the terrain. What's crazy are the 15 to 33% paved roads in my area. In fact the dirt trails are less steep. Also I'm completely sold on hookless for gravel. I can notice the stiffness and power transfer when spinning up the hill.

A quick 17 miles up and down Griffith today! The sun was out, but still chilly in the shady parts of the park.

I envy you. I was hoping to get out on my MTB for a quick Brown loop before sunset, but the heavens have opened up and the rain is coming down hard. A Zwift session is in my near future.
