Vintage Steyr Puch Bergmeister up for auction
Hey folks,
There’s an auction site called Caring Transitions that specializes in helping sell the belongings of people moving to care facilities. They often have weird old collectibles, and sometimes bikes. The only real trick to it is that they’re only for local pick-up, so you need to be local (or willing to drive a ways) to use them.
Just found a 60s Steyr Puch Bergmeister on sale, and nobody is bidding on it. Is this a good bike to try to restore? Is it collectible? Worth anything?
(As I don’t know much about the bike, if you want to poach it, feel free!)

I clicked on your auction link. I think that would be a great bike to restore. I didn't see anything wrong with the decals and I think the paint would clean up nice. I really like that seat tube decal!

Probably lower end, probably zero collector value, but a cool bike! On these more obscure models, which folks may or may not make decals for, something that has nice decals automatically goes up the chain a bit - one less thing to have to think about in the refurbishment.

the forum has had quite a good number of discussion threads on this model over the years; it was also sold by Sears under their J.C. Higgins name
if curious, you could use the forum search function to bring up the examples...

We sold a few of those at Bikecology during the 1973 dock strike, when our usual Nishiki and Peugeot deliveries became spotty. Other than the cool copper finish, it is fundamentally a basic, low-end Steyr-Daimler-Puch offering of roughly Peugeot UO-8 caliber. Not a bad bike, and great for general transportation, but it is Austrian, at least.

In my opinion, not worth restoring. Even if you bought it for $1, replacing tires, tubes, cables, etc. will cost you dearly.
Puch made some 531 double-butted framesets of much higher quality, but never really a collectible, either.
Better to start off with good bones - like a Raleigh Pro or Int'l, Cinelli, Basso, or Motobecane. Just my two cents worth.

That doesn't look too special to me, Good bike to dust off, tune up, lube and donate to Goodwill or the local ReStore store.

Looks like a downgrade from the 1960/61 model I had which came pre-turkey/dork with Campy Gran Sport and same brakes.

If someone gave me that bike for free, I'd take it straight to the co-op and donate it. Bottom of the barrel, basically a BSO (bike shaped object). I could not recoup the value of any consumables, while the co-op has the advantage of free (donated) consumables.
