Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chewuch River Road & Sun Mountain (pics)

My girlfriend and I rented a cabin in Winthrop, WA for the long weekend. We brought my bike and I got a couple of long rides in, I also rented an MTB and had some fun. We spent a day hiking but got snowed on, got back down to the valley and the sun was shining.

Forest Service Road 51 follows the Chewuch River, gradually heading into the highlands. I rode out to the end of the pavement and back, got about 35 hilly miles in, probably saw half a dozen cars other than the ones parked in campgrounds. Lots of solitude, great scenery, saw a few hawks, went by some trails I've enjoyed. Didn't get many pics because I was having too much fun to stop.

Getting to the top of Sun Mountain at sunset, having the road to myself, and coming down a curvy road at 40 mph was a blast. Sadly no pics. Went back and did a few Sun Mountain trails the next day.

^ The sign on the other side of the tree said "Warning: mules may attack dogs. Mules are unlikely to attack people."
