Researching Cycling Training Methods

A training plan just makes the whole process a bit more efficient. Although a fixed plan can be less effective than doing whatever you feel like. I use an adaptive plan when I really want to get into peak shape for a specific event, but I also use your method when I'm not training for anything specific. A good plan does tend to boost my performance over free ranging, but only for the short term.
Most people I ride with use a Smart trainer. The one guy who doesn't has really fallen behind in his relative bike fitness. He's planning to buy a Smart trainer this winter and I expect he will be a lot stronger next spring.

The problem I found every time I'd start a structured plan was that I'd fall behind almost immediately even though I'd be on the trainer 4-5 times a week, or conversely I'd be in the mood to ride hard and the plan said it was an easy day of soft pedaling or spinning. I just never seemed to be in sync with it and would give up on the plan.
Edit: I saw that my post from yesterday in the thread was my 7500th! It'll take 6 more years to get to 10k, except I don't post nearly as much as I used to so probably longer.

It's funny you say most people you ride with have a smart trainer. When I bought mine they were still few and far between, with the Kickr Core being a new lower price point that allowed people like myself to just buy one, otherwise it was a huge expenditure on a potential clothes rack. They are cheaper still now and there are probably a lot on the used market too from people that never got into it. I would talk to people on rides and almost nobody was doing it except the real serious riders.

I agree about fixed structured plans sometimes getting out of sync with your mood and energy levels. I just use them more as a guideline rather than a rigid plan. But they help me to improve my weaknesses which I would tend to avoid without a plan.

It was the crazy wet Winter we had this year, when riding outside was miserable and pretty dangerous.
