A longer term project for sure. Acquired from a friend of a relative recently, I had seen it last year but had trouble deciding if I wanted it at all and how much would I pay. https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...you-offer.html

$50 CDN later I have it at home and have committed to make it usable and presentable. Wish me luck!

I've dubbed him "Sir Ways A. Tonne" to reflect the English heritage and the 40.5 lb measured weight! Because of an added tariff for over 40lbs most US models did not have the fully enclosed chain. This was not applicable in the Canadian market.

I will chronicle my trials and tribulations as I go along and I'm sure some of you will be there for "virtual assistance."

No sir I don't but I assumed it was a speedo or odometer of some sort.

I ride a very similar 1979 version. You learn to work with the weight. It's worth it for the ride quality.
Lots of spares available, and do try the Kool-Stop brake pads.

Congrats!

Congratulations, you're joining the DL-1 Tourist club only a week behind me. Great name too! You got a great deal as well, although yours doesn't include the plush mattress saddle (ewww) as I paid 2 fifths of Scotch more for mine. I lucked out as it was available only 4 blocks from the house.

Good looking machine oddjob2 . I notice right away it has less rust than mine. What make of pump is on it?

Do they have KoolStops that work with rod brakes?

In both black and salmon formulas, yet. I have a salmon set, and by Jove they do work.

Mine, taken last wednesday. 1980 Nottingham serial number, 1979 date on the S-A AW hub.
Raleigh made these from 1911 to 1984.

Good to know. The one I had, the brakes weren't very good, especially when wet.

These bikes really are special. Mine is a 1973 model, all original. A totally different experience than other English 3 speeds or vintage American bikes.
True, I mostly ride this while I'm in Southern Florida and there are no hills to climb. Gears are all about the wind there
and 10 miles is a long ride on this bike. Still, it is so smooth and quiet and doesn't even tell you about small bumps and
lumpy pavement. It's a pleasure to ride in many ways. I am considering a 22t cog on the hub. Right now, I ride in normal
and use the underdrive for head winds. Overdrive is usless to me. Geared down, the overdrive would become my normal and
I would have 2 lower gears to cope with a headwind and a strong headwind. I figure I'd have 3 useful ratios instead of just 2.

gah.. i love these bikes, i found a 40 dollar barn find, that i restored. you can follow the process on this thread, and last year i acquired a 68 DL1 that had some damage, a tree branch had fallen on it and bent the handlebars, also the fenders are rotted out, it was at our coop waiting to be stripped and recycled when a local college kid came in and recognized it, he wanted to buy it for just the hubs, i offered to cut the hubs out if he would let me have the rest, he agreed and now its a long term project sitting in my basement. still waiting to pull the trigger on purchasing the reproduction stuff from Yellow Jersey. but i have since had the hubs rebuilt, so i'm almost there

For a short time, I commuted on a 1970s lady's DL-1, which I had found in someone's trash. I liked the bike a lot, and my commute is relatively short, but the rod brakes in urban stop-and-go riding, particularly when I was late for a meeting and really pushing that old rig, well, let's just say I recognized my mortality and switched to a different bike.

True. It's like riding a Cadillac. And the weight isn't that bad once you get spun up. In fact, those heavy rims give you a lot of angular (spinning) momentum, so once you get up to speed it's quite easy to hold it.

Mine's a 1966 I think (12/65 hub date, non-standard frame serial number). Note the "hockey stick" chain guard; I believe the U.S. imports required the bikes to come in at under 50 lb. or something like that, so they had to save a bit of weight here and there.

It is an unbranded generic pump

That's a handsome DL-1. Where does one find cream tires in the appropriate size?

I hope Doohickie meant a vintage Cadillac! The new ones are quite different.

I just mounted a Brooks Flyer and had to add a soda can shim around the seat post. My impression of ride quality is more like a 1970's Lincoln Continental, loosy/goosy ride and understeers like crazy. Brakes, what brakes? Will order my first set of Kool Stops ever.

This is really great. I didn't know there were many Roadster fans besides me out there. So...I'm not crazy after all.

don't want to jack the thread, but i need some input, replacement fenders at yellow jersey are nice, 50 bucks, and come close to matching the vintage. I found these on my local CL today for 20 bucks, would it be sacrilege to put them on a DL-1?

Do you think anyone in Rochester is going to send the Raleigh Police after you? The real question is, will they fit the ginormous tires?

Here is my DL-1 again with a quick 30 minute fluff and a Brooks Flyer. I could get the white paint streak off the TT, but it is too close to the red pinstripe.

i'm not worried so much about the purists, just want it to look a little right , given the struts are similar on the CL fenders and the yellow jersey replicas, they would probably look the same. The ad states that they will fit 28" wheels, heres hoping !

It's in pieces so, it would be difficult, plus I don't have it with me at work.

I think I'm all that's left of the Raleigh police force, and I moved away from Rochester in '81. If they fit, they'll look fine, even if not exactly "right".
