I just got a 2015 Scott Solace 30 and am dumbfounded by its porkiness.

This is a size S model. After adding in a Specialized Toupe Pro saddle (carbon rails and all), removed the reflectors, swapped in a 113g stem, the bike weighs in at a massive 8.46kg (18.65lbs).

I will admit that this includes approx 200g (0.4lb) of speedplay pedals.

But still this is a carbon bike, for goodness' sake! And even subtracting the pedals, the weight is more than Scott's claimed number.

Is anyone else seeing the same thing or did I get a dud?

I build wheels as a side hobby so I can definitely get the weight down with a new 1400g wheelset.

The solace is not a racing bike. Why do you even care what it weighs?

Solace 30 has heavier Tiagra components. If you got it with disc brakes then there's a additional weight penalty for that. I have a CR1 20 which weighs 18.20, still the lightest bike I've owned.

Also, I just checked the specs on the Scott web site and it has the Solace 30 at 19.58 lbs. (with disc brakes), the Solace 20 is 18.39 (without disc brakes but add in about .7 lbs. for the Tiagra). Basically, you got what was advertised.

In the grand scheme of things a pound or two doesn't make any difference but for me, it's an indicator of frame quality. Also, as a modder, weight gives me a baseline to measure upgrade effectiveness.

my friend's new carbon Emonda with 105 weighs around 19 lbs

my other friend's Orbea Orca bronze with Sora was about 23 lbs

The Emonda 105 has the same "list" price as the Solace 30.

So I guess that's where the weight "should" be.

Tempted to return the bike and get an Allez instead. At least if it's heavy, I can blame that on the alu

Get rid of the dork disc too, if you haven't already.

18.6 lbs is light, and not even 4 lbs off the UCI weight limit. I've had bowel movements heavier than that. I've lost more than that in water weight on a 50 mile ride.

Anyway, the RS11 wheelset is nearly 1900g, without skewers, tape, tubes and tires. The 105 group isn't the lightest in the world either. Going to a 1400g wheelset, superlight skewers, and an Ultegra group, you'd save about 1.5 lbs. Also, don't know what bottle cages you're using, but that may be adding to the weight.

Get some better bar tape, and lighter bars. You can get lighter tires, latex tubes (waste of money, but if being a weight weenie is your goal), lighter seat post, lighter headset, etc. All in all, I bet you can get the bike down to under 15 lbs easy.


... or, you could ride it and lose 3.6 lbs off your body for far less money.

That's probably without pedals, so I think you're sitting right where it should be. Carbon doesn't always mean ultra lightweight.

My ALR 5 60cm weighs about 18.5, and I think that's wonderful. I had to swap wheels to get it that low though. I wouldn't complain if it was 18.5 with stock wheels.

If you want a lighter bike, get a lighter groupset and wheels.

Yup. I built my new bike with 1400g wheels and Ultegra and it's right around 15 lbs. My friend build up a similar frame with 105 and heavier wheels (and heavier stem, bars, saddle, seatpost) and his bike is nearly 18 lbs

I think the Solace HMF frame weighs about 900 g so the frame is not your issue (not that there is an issue). It's a very nice looking bike too. Wheels are boat anchors though

Well, I'm wondering with the total weight of the bike so far, whether that 900g number is even accurate.

The 2011 Felt F5 has a 900+g frame plus sub-300g fork. I measured an unmodded/stock one (with 105 equipment) to be approx 17.8 lbs.

On the other hand, a lower end Kestrel Legend weighed in at 18.5 lbs (same 105 equipment) and it's frameset weight is definitely more than 900+g. It's only the high end Legend that has the 900g frame.

Hmmm. Maybe it's time to strip the Solace...

I would start by upgrading the frame, groupset, wheels, and contact points. 19 lbs is unacceptable.

I don't have a new lightweight 11-speed wheelset to put on the Solace, so I did the next best thing and put the 10-speed set (1500g) that I used with the Kestrel.

The end result?

The Solace with just the wheelset change is lighter than the Kestrel and the stock F5. But still about a pound or so on the blinged out F5 (with SRAM Force).

At least I can take solace that the Solace frameset is likely not as "bad" the Kestrel...

I am building up a 54cm ALR with Ultegra and Boyd wheels and will end up between 15.9 and 16 lbs after all is said and done including pedals. Big weight droppers for me on this bike were wheels, tires, seatpost and handlebars. This bike weighs less than my Carbon Synapse did with the same components. Only difference beside frame is will be handlebars and Crank.

And what did that Miele cost? And how much is that in today's dollars?

My 2003 LOOK KG386 with Ultegra weighs less but I don't really want to recall what that cost me. Pretty sure the frame alone was more than this Scott bike.
