Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help valuing Craigslist road bike

Hello, I currently ride a hybrid bike but I would like to get into longer riding and I am interested in a good road bike. I am hoping to save some money by buying used, but I don't want to have to sink $$ into replacing parts right away. I found this bike on Craigslist near me:

Cannondale R700

The size seems right and I trust the brand (my current bike is a Cannondale). Also, the model seems to have earned good reviews. Is the asking price ($450) a fair price for the bike? Sorry I don't have a lot of other info than what's in the Craigslist post. Thanks for your help!

I've not ridden that bike, but a 52 for a "under 5'9" doesn't sound right. Be sure it fits you comfortably. It appears to be a double in the pic, but says 27 speed, am I missing something or does that refer to the other bike? Not a fan of a triple if your area/riding style don't require it. If it's as clean as it looks and all good otherwise, $450 could be a fair price, though I'd offer 3-350 to start, if I loved it.

or

2006 Cannondale R700 Triple - New and Used Bike Value

Based on color selection, probably the 2005 model.

The ad says 54.

I would probably like to get it for $350 where I live but markets vary depending on your location

Thank you all for your replies! Is recommended size generally different between a hybrid and a road bike? I would obviously test-ride before buying, but if that will be way too small then I will probably not drive all the way out there at all.

i think it should be alright if your current bike is 54 and it a bit large, but only one way to know for sure!

If it fits and it's in good shape (looks good in the pic) then the price seems fair, at least in my area. I would shoot for $350 and be pleased to get it for anything less than asking. Looks like a 2005 model. Good luck!

Hybrids usually size similar to mountain bikes, due the handlebars and riding positions. Because the riding position is so different you can't really due a straight numeric comparison between hybrids and road bikes, generic sizing is usually much more comparable. For example, I'm a L on Giant road bikes, and the same on mountain bikes. Normally, a 52cm bike would be appropriate for someone about 5'5", if you're closer to 5'9" you'd likely want a 54cm. If you're having trouble getting enough stand-over height with correct size, then you want a bike with a sloping top tube.

Then again I'm nearly 5'11 and I had a 54 caad9 that fit great. I currently have two other bikes that are both 54 and fit great. OP won't know for sure without testing
