I've done the ride, but with the BIG group in October. They carried all our gear every day. It also goes the opposite way, mountains to the sea. Your BIG challenge would be the assault on the mountains. I remember the descent, about 7 miles of screaming downhill. You, of course, would be panting uphill. I love the ride and do it every year since I "discovered" it.

Many posts mention that you can get maps from DOT. This is one of the routes. As I live in the mountians I can only comment on that portion of the route. It starts in Murphy, takes backroads to Cullowhee, climbs up highway 74 to the Parkway to somewhere past Asheville and out of the mountians. It goes thru Winston/Salem and Raleigh/Durham. It ends on the north side of the coast in Roanoke Island. Its 700 miles long. I believe there is a route from Wilmington twoards west as well.
As far as that 7 mile uphill into the mountains, the climb from cullowhee to the parkway via 74 is a 5-7 mile climb, and once you hit the parkway its another 7 mile climb to Richland Balsam, so it might actually be an issue of picking your poison as far as which direction you take it. On either side of Asheville its a 7 mile climb/descent as well. Not trying to scare you, I'm a former flatlander and can climb all these hills, I'm just making you aware, and letting you know that either direction is going to be brutal.
Have fun,
Scott

Go here to order the maps, they have camping sites, tourist attractions along the way and good descriptions of the terrain for each leg. It takes about 2 weeks for them to come to your house by mail:

Good luck getting those maps, I have requested three times in the past year.

Also, there is a large Mountains to Sea tour this fall (Asheville to Wilmington). I plan on doing this. You should try to do it if you can swing the money.

Google: Cycle NC or North Carolina Amateur Sports

Did you do it at the website? Did you get confirmation in e-mail that your order had gone through?

I ordered mine last month and they came in 2 weeks.

I'm not sure if this will work, but I have a meeting, on Thursday, in the same building that The NC Division of Tourism is in downtown. I think you can get the maps there. I will look and if I can find them I'll mail them to you guys.

You would rock if you did that. I just tried again and still have not received a confirmation via email.

Glad my tax dollars are going to good use at the DOT
