Solid Steel Seatpost

I found a Huffy BMX bike almost identical to my childhood bike and decided to buy it and fix it up and beat it around the shop during the winter months, but I was afraid to ride it much because if I sit in the saddle, I was not comfortable and I was afraid the seatpost would bend since it was not very long and it was 13/16" diameter. In this pic of when I first got the bike, the seatpost was already past the "Max" mark on the factory post.........

I was throwing scrap out and seen this 7 foot long bent pipe in buried in the pile. I went and grabbed a 13/16" combination wrench and it measured out perfect. I had to spend some time digging this post out of the pile, but I managed to get it, cut it to a proper length utilizing the bend, spray painted it with fake chrome and it was a nice, snug fit in the Pro Thunder BMX bike frame and I got it almost down to the bb area. I am very happy with this upgrade because I know I will not bend the post and it's very secure. I am also happy because I am six foot tall and 230lbs and have no problems riding around on a 20" BMX for fun.............

Nice find and great application. When you say solid, like the pic appears to show, I think of weight. You also say "pipe" which makes me think that it isn't a solid rod of steel. It's all relative and I can understand putting durability ahead of most other considerations. But if "solid" that is one overbuilt seatpost.

Why are you sitting on a bmx bike anyway? I thought they rode around 98% of the time standing up (hence why the seat is almost always pushed down and out of the way on every BMX bike that I see.)

I ride mostly Huffy bikes and yes, they are all heavy. With my current size and weight, a few extra pounds on the bike mean nothing. I will say that the solid steel post is very heavy but it's still the lightest Huffy I own

This is not a "Freestyle" bike and it's an old school BMX, so no slammed saddle.

BMX track races are over bumps and Moguls and around berm-ed corners .. You watch the BMX heats on TV from the London Olympics?

Moto Cross , minus the Motors. Its a only sit down waiting for the race to start situation there ..

You got a JRA not competing in anything rig there.. nice scrap recycling Job anyhow.

that overlong bolt can make a nice gash in your leg, I'd saw it off shorter.

Seems way overkill to have a solid steel seatpost or to have it extend to the bottom bracket. Like tying bricks to the bike. But it does look nice.

With a quick release clamp that could make a handy weapon.

Love that you live in Ashtabula, Ohio since that's what type of cranks that bike has!

Good job on cleaning up the rest of the bike, too...

This is actually the first time on a 20" BMX since I was a kid on the same kind of bike. As far as my commuting and long rides go in fair weather, I will stick with the bigger bikes. Of course it might be fun to do a critical mass on this BMX.

I taught myself (as an adult) to ride a BMX bike while sitting on the handle bar cross brace facing backwards. It didn't all take that long, but looks pretty cool. Try it.

Also, standing on the rear pegs coasting, with arms extended all the way out. The neighborhood kids really freaked on that one!

And wheelies, of course.
