Trek 6000 fork, stem bars welded?

I have a 1991 trek 6000 MTB I am overhauling. Looking to replace the original matrix handlebars. But it looks like the fork, stem, and bars are all welded together? Used to newer road bikes so this config is confusing to me. Any insights? Thanks all!

There are bar/stem units which are welded as one piece but they use a quill type insertion into the fork's steerer. It is quite possible that this interface has rusted in place. But as always, photos will start the answering process with better info. Andy.

Stock for a 1991 6000 should be True Temper competition Cro-moly Black, not Matrix, Regardless of what you have, the fork, stem & handlebar wll be 3 individual items, which should all be attached using hex bolts/the threaded headset.

Have a look here for details of threaded headsets Headset Standards - Park Tool you will need 1" headset spanners to adjust/remove this, however unless your planning on replacing the fork (this looks to be a 1" from research), would leave as is, as getting a decent quality quill stem could be difficult.

Thanks all. I stand corrected, it is the True Temper. I am the original owner, and while I've had some shop tune-ups over the years, I don't think the fork/stem/bars have been given much/any attention. After stripping it down and cleaning it up, I think I'm going to keep them...it will then have all original components with the only real change being the seat.

Sometimes unscrewing the stem bolt and hitting the stem on top with a rubber mallet helps get it loose.

Sounds like you got this one solved tho..
