Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best tube?

I have searched and looked on the net. Many different opinions of course but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Favorite tube? Not looking for ultra light racing or thorn resistant, cost is no issue, just good quality lightish road tube. 700 x 23 presta

I've had great luck with these over several years and many miles:

You can get them really cheap from Ribble.

+1 on Continental.

They are made differently from many tubes - extruded and seamless. No seam to fail.

Whatever shop is closest, I usually end up with specialized or wal mart tubes. Can't say I see much difference.

Me neither. Maybe I'm just a noob to not realize the difference between a $8 tube and a $2 tube

I hate it when people say they are all the same.

That said, they are pretty much all the same. There are lighter ones that are thinner but less durable, and thicker ones that are heavier and more durable. Get whatever fits your needs/budget but don't overthink this one.

I agree that Michelin and Continental (of the widely available brands) do seem to be slightly better than the generics, at least in terms of quality control. I prefer Michelin, which are usually a little lighter and more supple than comparably priced Continental tubes. Also, Michelin has non-threaded presta stems, which I slightly prefer.

I am pretty much in accordance with the other comments on this thread. I have tried the latex tubes and found that they loose air rapidly and need to be pumped up every day. They also were a PIA to patch.

I'm not sure where to snag $2 tubes locally. Most are around $5.

If I'm doing a big online order, I'll tack on a couple extra tubes, whatever is cheapest, and take advantage of the free shipping.

If a company came out with cheap ribless, seamless tubes, I'd be all over it for patchability. Otherwise I don't see much difference.

I haven't gone very deep wall with my rims yet, so I just snag the shortest stems. That might be a factor sometime.

I have used Conti race 28 tubes for years and I see no reason to change now. It may not make any difference but I my brain makes me put Conti tubes inside Conti tires.

When they're on sale, I like the Maxxis Ultralight tubes, 67 grams for the 48 mm length presta valve tube. Cheap weight weenie savings without compromising anything since flats are usually a matter of road debris and bad luck for me. But to be honest I have all kinds of different tubes in my stash, the main thing they have in common is that they were on sale when I bought them.

Schwalbe and Continental are German companies , but the rubber trees dont grow there ..
(though, Butyl rubber comes largely from Oil)

Other Euro Brands Vredestein , NL, _ Michelin, France..

The mould to Open has separation lines .. the rubber of your tube wont have an inside seam..

The tube is not nearly as important as the air you put in it:

Ok, so far today I purchased two Michelin and two Conti tubes. I have a new set of GP4000 II's on their way and I like to put new tubes in as well. The extras are going into a set of spare wheels I always bring on trips so I won't have to spend any vaca time getting spokes replaced.

Hope to be in western NC in a few weeks for some chilly climbing.

My favorite climb is my favorite decent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9T-PY3haKA

^ Not to mention the 19.90 British Pound = $28.73 USD price. Each!
(That's $38.73 each in Canuck bucks! )

ah rats, can't get up there until 3rd week in March, I usually stay in Waynesville or on Tunnel Rd so I can hit either Waterrock Knob or town mountain rd then on to Craggy.

Western NC is the best, I need to get there when the Parkway is closed sometime.
